Aston man charged with producing child pornography
MEDIA COURTHOUSE » An Aston man previously arrested on child pornography charges is now facing sexual assault charges as well, according to a release from Delaware County District Attorney Katayoun M. Copeland.
“The horrific actions of the defendant, Charles Orlando, are inconceivable, deplorable and abhorrent, as he sexually abused two innocent children, and further exploited them through the creation of child pornography depicting his appalling actions,” said Copeland. “As he is currently incarcerated, Mr. Orlando can cause no more harm to these innocent children, who have suffered tremendously.”
Orlando, 41, of the 2900 block of Concord Road, was arrested July 25 and charged with 25 counts each of possession of child pornography and criminal use of a communication facility, felonies of the third degree. Most of those charges were withdrawn and he was formally arraigned on one count each of possession and criminal use of a communication facility last week. Orlando is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on those charges before Common Pleas Court Judge Barry Dozor Sept. 17.
Two additional charges of aggravated indecent assault of a child and five counts of photographing a sex act with a child were filed Wednesday after a continuing investigation by Detective Sgt. Kenneth Bellis and Detective Edmond Pisani of the District Attorney’s Criminal Investigation Division and Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
The initial arrest came about after Orlando allegedly uploaded more than 350 images of child pornography to his Google Photos account. Multiple reports were made to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Google identified the user name associated with the account as Charles Orlando, according to the release.
County detectives and Aston Police officers executed a search warrant at Orlando’s residence July 24 and recovered several items, including cellphones, a laptop computer and a San Disk SD card, according to the release.
A preliminary examination of one cellphone allegedly revealed at least 25 images of child pornography. A subsequent forensic examination of the laptop computer conducted by Pisani identified 690 images of child pornography, including 244 unique images, and an examination of the SD card uncovered images of Orlando sexually abusing two minor female children, the release states.
Investigators determined that the assaults took place in February 2011 in Norwood Borough, where Orlando was living at the time. The images appear to have been taken in Orlando’s home and bathroom, according to the release.
Orlando remains incarcerated at the county prison in Concord, having failed to post original bail of $150,000 or the 10 percent of $250,000 bail set by Magisterial District Judge Michael A. Burns in the assault case Wednesday. A preliminary hearing for the second case is scheduled for Oct. 3 before Burns. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Boggs will be prosecuting. Defense attorney Joseph Malley is representing Orlando. Malley did not respond to a call seeking comment Thursday.
