U.D. cops still looking for woman who fled court
UPPER DARBY » The woman who escaped from a district court in Upper Darby is still on the loose authorities said.
Upper Darby police are still looking for Carolyn Quiah, 26, who ran out from constables’ custody on Thursday afternoon from the magisterial court in Secane wearing underwear, slippers and part of a torn sheet she was provided to wear before her hearing with Judge Kelly MicozzieAguirre. She was awaiting a preliminary hearing for allegedly biting a county Office of Children and Youth Services worker on Sept. 10 during a home visit.
Quiah was last seen on Friday at approximately 7:00 p.m. in a beauty supply store on the 100 block of East Baltimore Avenue in Lansdowne. Surveillance footage from the store shows her fully dressed yet shoeless talking on a cell phone and then driving away from the store in a tan- or gold-colored, model year 2006 to 2010 Kia Sedona LX minivan.
Police were notified by store personnel about Quiah’s presence.
“They called police 15 minutes later so we put a wanted flyer out,” said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. Information has been circulated to the National Crime Information Center and with area law enforcement agencies for officers to be on the lookout for the vehicle and Quiah.
Chitwood said he is not sure where Quiah could be, but guesses Philadelphia may be an area of interest.
Because she was seen in the beauty store wearing clothes and driving a car, Chitwood believes someone is helping her with her escape from justice.
Quiah is no stranger to evading justice.
A warrant was issued for Quiah for the alleged assault against the county worker who then led Pennsylvania State Police on a chase Wednesday before crashing her vehicle in the Western portion of the county. She was treated at Paoli Memorial Hospital before being transported in a bloody hospital gown to Micozzie’s court.
Before her hearing, she took off her gown when a court constable brought her a sheet to cover her up. She tore a piece of sheet off to wear and threw the remaining sheet on the constable and escaped around 2 p.m.
Police had a large area in the Secane and Primos sections of the township along with the Briarcliff section of Darby Township in search of Quiah Thursday afternoon immediately after her escape. A number of police agencies were still scoping out major roadways in the area later that night.
Anyone with information on Quiah’s whereabouts are asked to call Upper Darby police at 610-734-7693.
