Haverford wins robotics competition for second time
HAVERFORD >> For the second-consecutive year, a team of 17 Haverford School students earned first place in the 2018 High School Soft Robotics Design Competition sponsored by Harvard University Approximately 80 teams from around the world submitted designs.
Their project involved creating a soon-to-be patented single-pour mold system, the King Actuator, that utilizes soluble inserts to solve the problems of delamination common in two-part molds. The students designed a sensory glove and then an actuators glove that would help novice ceramics students learn to throw pottery in a more efficient manner by transferring the hand motion of their art instructor.
The patent covers the method of creating actuators and the sensor and actuators gloves for transferring motion from an expert to a novice.
Widener’s Old Main Turns 150
CHESTER>> Widener will celebrate the sesquicentennial of its Old Main building with free public viewings during homecoming/ reunion weekend. A public celebration is scheduled for
4:30 p.m. on Oct. 11 on the building’s 14th Street Lawn with public viewings of the building on Oct. 12 and 13.
The university was known as Pennsylvania Military Academy when the cornerstone of Old Main was laid in June
1867, two years after the end of the Civil War. Built for $125,000 to accommodate
Haverford School adds members to service group
HAVERFORD>> A dozen students were added to the Haverford School’s Signet Society, the school’s honorary service association.
Members are chosen by their fellow students and faculty. Signet’s purpose is to “develop a wholesome School spirit, to support the best things that the School undertakes, and to discover and encourage ability in all activities in which the School takes a part.”
