100 Years Ago – 1918: Charles M. Schwab, the human dynamo of the Shipping Board, at the close of a speech before thousands of workers at the Sun Shipbuildi­ng Co. yesterday, bought $20,000 worth of Fourth Liberty Loan Bonds. This incentive led the workers to bring their total for the plant to well over the three-quarter of a million mark to date.

75 Years Ago – 1943: “Freedom of the press is just a reflection of the freedom we have as individual­s,” Jack B. Thompson, editorial writer and reporter for the Chester Times, told members of the Chester Optimist Club at their weekly meeting in the Chester Club. Since this is National Newspaper Week … the speaker traced the early developmen­t of newspapers and told of the trial of Peter Zenger in New York in 1735, which resulted in the establishm­ent of the principle that newspapers could print the truth and fact.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Seven Delaware County residents, including one teenager, were arrested Friday night after Upper Darby policemen raided the rented home of a 21-yearold mother of two. Three of those arrested were charged with drug violations. When police entered the home, the woman was holding her 1-month-old son in her arms and her

18-month-old daughter was asleep in a crib upstairs. Detective Jack Samuels said a hypodermic needle and syringe, which “still had several drops of fluid in it,” was found in a sofa cushion.

25 Years Ago – 1993: A parent activist is asking the William Penn School District to introduce the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program in the district. Marlene Lenton, president of the Advocates for Colwyn Elementary Students, presented the suggestion at a recent school board meeting. Under the program, sponsored by the Commission on Crime and Delinquenc­y in Harrisburg, police officers from local boroughs would be sent to an 80-hour training course to prepare them to present a drug education course in the elementary schools.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Another “Most Wanted” fugitive was apprehende­d Saturday morning, after leading Chester and Pennsylvan­ia State Police on a high-speed vehicle chase and eventually crashing his car into a tree. The

21-year-old was wanted for an armed robbery in 2005 and is a potential suspect in as many as three homicides and other robberies.
