100 Years Ago – 1918:
Aid from Washington and Harrisburg is being rushed here to help the Health Department in battling the grip (Spanish influenza) epidemic that has paralyzed the war munition plants and shipyards in this important district. The malady continues to spread and the Health Department is taking every precaution to wipe out the disease as soon as possible. The first emergency hospital in the Armory, Sixth and Sproul streets, has been taxed to capacity. A second at the Odd Fellows Temple will open today. Several persons died in the Armory hospital up until noon today and others are expected.
75 Years Ago – 1943: Caught in the act of stealing about a dozen cartons of eggs at 6 p.m. yesterday, a small boy and girl scrambled their loot by dropping the eggs on the sidewalk and fled. Behind them they left a disconsolate restaurant owner, Alexander Demopoulos, of
30 E. Seventh St., wondering how he was going to fill orders for ham and eggs.
50 Years Ago – 1968: Nearly 2 inches of rain fell on parts of Delaware County on Sunday night and early tonight, ending almost four weeks of drought. But, Delaware County Fire Marshal William J. Myers had a wait-and-see attitude considering the possibility of lifting a county-wide ban on outdoor fires. It was the first measurable precipitation since Sept.

25 Years Ago – 1993: The Chester Democratic Party will do two long-awaited things today – unify its two formerly warring factions and open a real party headquarters. Party Chairman Jim Harper will preside over the opening of the new headquarters at 504 Edgmont Ave. at 5 p.m. ceremony. After that, state Rep. Thaddeus Kirkland, D-159, will endorse a unified slate of candidates made up of winners of the May Primary: Josephine Hood and Anzer Kirkland for council; William “Al” Jacobs and Liz Williams for district justice; and school board hopefuls Lucille Gyant, Livia Smith, Reuben Guy and Bill Nix.
