Radnor’s Colleran in hunt for district title

-

Radnor’s David Colleran and Blake Stephano, and Strath Haven’s Kevin Smith and David Merz are still alive in the District 1 boys Class 3A golf tournament. All four made the cut for Tuesday’s second round at Turtle Creek Golf Course in Gilbertsville.

On the girls side, Haverford High’s Riley Quartermain was the only Delco golfer to make it through to the Class 3A second round. Colleran and Smith stand the best chance of moving on to next week’s PIAA East Regional Oct. 15 at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood.

Colleran is in fourth place after a 2-under par 70 in the first round. Only a double bogey on

18 kept him from a share of the lead with Luca Jezzeny of Central Bucks West. Colleran, the coCentral League champion, got off to a strong start with three straight birdies. He wound up with four birdies on the first nine to make the turn at 3-under and six birdies overall.

Hart is tied with Central Bucks East’s Patrick Sheehan after firing an even-par 72. He made the turn in 1-under par. Stephano and Merz are in an 11way tie for 30th place. Both shot

5-over par 77 in the first round. The top 18 finishers qualify for next week’s regional.

Quarterman is in sixth place after turning in a 2-over par 73 at Gilbertsville Golf Club. She birdied three holes to finish with a

1-under par 35 on the back nine. The girls tournament switches to Turtle Creek on Tuesday. The top nine finishers advance to the regional tournament.

Marple Newtown’s GillYoung Koh carded an 11-over par 82 to miss qualifying for a spot in the second round by one stroke. Radnor’s June Kim and Strath Haven’s Grace Smith placed in the top 25 of the 75-player field. Kim shot a 13-over par 84 to finished

22nd, while Smith turned in an

86 for a two-way tie for 25th.
