100 Years Ago – 1918: That tippling portion of the population of Chester, which occasionally finds lodging for the night in the police station house, is being depleted in this “dry” time. As a matter of fact, House Sergeants “Bob” Law and “Jimmy” Wright are getting lonely waiting for these usual “D and Ds” who have always turned up regularly in the evening and slept off their jags and explained their condition to “Judge” Berry in the morning. “D and Ds” is the police term for intoxicated person, from the charge “drunk and disorderly” abbreviated on the police blotter. The reason is the spread of influenza and the closing order for affected saloons.

75 Years Ago – 1943:

A message from Salada Tea: Give your grocer his due – the tea situation has improved but supplies are still restricted, so if you can’t always buy Salada Tea in the style or size you like – packaged or tea bags – don’t blame your grocer! He is doing the best he can with available supplies.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Seven persons were arrested Wednesday on charges stemming from the assaults and disturbances at Saturday’s Chester-Sun Valley high school football game. All were charged with inciting to riot while additional charges of aggravated assault and battery were placed against three. Only one was identified as a Chester High School student.

25 Years Ago – 1993: A satellite network run by the State Library of Pennsylvania could come to the Rachel Kohl Community Library in Concord Township. Gary Wolfe of the state library told supervisors that the teleconferencing network would be a first in the Delaware County Library System. It would bring training programs to all the county’s library staff and volunteers, as well as continuing education to interested businesses and community groups. Supervisor Chairman John Kemper expressed several concerns about the proposal, including the aesthetics of the necessary

10-foot-diameter satellite dish, and the potential for scheduling problems.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Another of Chester’s “Most Wanted” fugitives was apprehended after being discovered hiding under insulation in a Kentucky attic. The 21-year-old is facing attempted homicide charges in Chester. Chester investigators received information about his whereabouts after his photo was published several times in the Daily Times. After denying his identity and giving police a fake name when discovered, he responded “What?” when an officer called out his real name as he was being escorted to a police car.
