Hederick paces Radnor in district playoff opener
Lucy Hederick outlasted her opponent in three sets at second singles as Radnor swept Methacton, 5-0 in the opening round of the District 1 Class
3A Girls Tennis Tournament. Hederick won, 6-3 to open the match, dropping the second, 3-6 and closed things out with a 10-7 victory in the third set. Kanon Ciarrocchi took home a 6-3, 7-6(3) win in the No. 1 singles match and the tandem of Grace Figerio and Jessica Gusdorff won in straight sets in the No. 2 doubles match to seal the sweep. The sixth-seeded Raiders advance to Thursday’s quarterfinals against No. 3 seed Unionville.
In the Central League: HAVERFORD 6, RIDLEY 1 >> The Fords (611, 4-7) won all three singles matches in straight sets including Zoe Bozman’s
6-2, 7-5 victory in the No. 3 match. Maddie Williams and Olivia Gerhart put together a gritty win in the No. 4 doubles match taking the third set, 10-7.
The Raiders were led by the tandem of Saige Thammavong and Taylor Dath, who took home the sole victory for their side, 6-1, 6-2.
In the Inter-Ac:
EPISCOPAL ACADEMY 7, SPRINGSIDE CHESTNUT HILL 0 >> Ashley Kennedy, Ella Walker and Bella Calastri did not drop a game in singles play to help the Churchwomen (10-0, 4-0) remain undefeated.
Episcopal Academy only dropped two games in the doubles competition, which included two straight-set victories in No. 1 (Cara Harty-Eliza Aldridge) and No. 2 (Grace HenniganCaroline Burt) match.
In nonleague action:
SUN VALLEY 6, BONNER & PRENDERGAST
1>> Devon Cronin and Maddy Koons picked up straight-set victories in the
No.1 and No.2 singles matches, respectively, to earned their fourth individual wins in a row.
Amanda Neubauer and Kaitlin Lynch pulled out the toughest match of the day against the Pandas’ Crisolin Prakash and Destiny Pierre-Matthieu, winning 6-4, 7-5.
Bonner & Prendergast claimed a victory in the No. 4 doubles match as Mackensie Dyer and Dominique Dyer won in three sets 6-1, 2-6, 6-0.
Field Hockey
Mikayla Schuster scored the first goal of the game and assisted on the final one as Delco Christian scored three times in the second half to take a 3-0 Bicentennial League victory over Bristol.
Schuster was credited with the assist on Brooke VanEerden’s goal. Hannah Lee scored the second goal with a helper from Abby Chung for the Knights (3-9, 2-9), who won their third match in five games.
In the Central League:
GARNET VALLEY 4, STRATH HAVEN 1 >> Kendal DiCamillo scored two goals in the second half on her way to a hat trick, Kerry Bradley added one of her own and Rachel Snow had four saves for the Jaguars, who led 2-0 at halftime.
Ashley Hassell scored the lone goal for the Panthers (2-8-2, 2-6-1) and goalkeeper Breana Raysor made three saves.
RADNOR 8, LOWER MERION 1 >> Page Lowry netted a hat trick and Janie Hoysgaard had two goals and one assist for the Raiders, who outshot the Aces, 19-6.
Barbara Civitella added a goal and two assists while Genevieve Mehra and Olivia Shea had one goal and one assist apiece.
HARRITON 2, SPRINGFIELD 0 >> Lily Sillbergerd and Katelin Williams scored one goal each to propel the Ram. CONESTOGA 15, UPPER DARBY 0 >> The Royals only had one shot on goal and allowed four different players to score two goals each. Goalkeeper Mariama Keita made 13 saves for Upper Darby.
In the Del Val:
INTERBORO 1, ACADEMY PARK 0 >> Dani Linker scored the decisive goal in the first half off an assist from Marissa Mullen and goalie Gab MacDonald assured a shutout in net for the Bucs (68, 3-2).
Taylor Zane made 15 saves in goal for the Knights.
Boys Cross Country
Doug Rosin and Ethan Zeh tied for first place with a time of 18:06 to lead Radnor to Central League victories over Ridley (15-50), Springfield (15-46) and Strath Haven (17-42). Frank Brown placed third for the Raiders.
Strath Haven claimed a pair of wins against Ridley (15-49) and Springfield (2332). The Panthers’ top finisher was Alex Melly, who placed fourth. Radnor’s Owen Leonard and Andrew Rosin were fifth and sixth, respectively, while Springfield’s Michael Remy took seventh place. Springfield defeated Ridley, 15-47.
Girls Cross Country
Strath Haven clinched a perfect season with Central League decisions over Radnor (15-49), Ridley (15-50) and Springfield (14-50).
Nine of the top-10 finishers were Strath Haven runners. Grace Forbes was the overall winner with a time of 23:15. Abby Loiselle (second), Ava Crawford (third), Sierra Hellman (four), Paige Day (fifth) and Olivia Malley (sixth) crossed the end line in successive fashion.
Disrupting Strath Haven’s goal for a clean sweep was Radnor’s Abigail Idiculla, who claimed seventh place. Gwenyth Stack and Hannah Barkdoll tied for eighth place for the Panthers, while teammate Ava Fowler followed three seconds behind for 10th.
Radnor downed Ridley, 27-30. Springfield and Ridley each scored 28 points, but the Green Raiders picked up the win via tiebreaker.
Volleyball
An injury to a key starter forced Cardinal O’Hara’s Maeve Boylan to switch positions for the Lions’ Catholic League matchup against Bonner & Prendie.
Boylan was excellent in her debut as outside hitter and O’Hara rolled to a 3-0 win (25-10, 25-12, 25-19). Boylan filled up the stat sheet with eight kills, seven aces, six digs and 15 assists for the Lions.
In her first varsity action freshman Kelly Garvey contributed 12 assists, six digs and an ace. Sarah McGarrity pitched in with 13 digs and five aces, and Isa Kirchner added five kills and two blocks.
