To the Times:
A Monday Philadelphia newspaper front-page article on climate change refers to the United States as “the world’s second-largest emitter of carbon dioxide.” China is the largest total emitter (by a small margin) only because they have a much larger population than us. Let me clarify the U.S. performance in the emissions arena in order to help you and me fully shoulder our responsibility.
On a per-capita basis, each of us Americans is far and away the world’s largest carbon dioxide emitter. If China and India, each with over four times as many people as the U.S., ever approach our per capita emissions level, the current level of climate change-caused deaths and population displacements will be devastating.
The fact is that today people are dying and being displaced (“climate refugees”) – especially in Asia/Pacific low-lying areas and among the world’s poorest populations. And we Americans are contributing the most per-capita to not reversing – or even seriously addressing – the emissions causing it.
And the facts show we can blame Trump and his party for making changes to make this worse during his administration. That’s not fake news, it’s the truth.
This is a big story. Perhaps there should be front-page articles on climate change impacts daily.
Please stay focused on who is to blame — Trump and his party.
