Newest cadets recognized at Valley Forge
Valley Forge Military Academy & College welcomed parents, guardians and family members of the 91st Corps of Cadets to campus recently for Parents & Recognition Weekend.
The celebratory weekend is held annually to mark the end of VFMAC’s period of training known as the “Plebe System.” After honing their leadership, physical and mental skills through the Plebe System, “plebes” are officially recognized as members of the Corps of Cadets on Recognition Day. Parents and family members are encouraged to visit campus to join in the celebration with their newlyminted cadets.
VFMAC President Major General Walter T. Lord, U.S. Army (Ret.) ‘84C, along with other key members of school leadership, was on hand to welcome proud families and congratulate the cadets.
“These young men and women have shown they have the discipline, fortitude and leadership qualities to be successful at Valley Forge Military Academy and College,” said General Lord. “Their education here will prepare them to become leaders at every level, whether that’s on the battlefield or in the boardroom. We are enormously proud of this Corps of Cadets, and I offer my sincere congratulations.”
Widener receives grant to improve HIV education
CHESTER >> Widener University’s Interdisciplinary Sexuality Research Collaborative has received a third year of funding from ViiV Healthcare, bringing the company’s total investment in Widener to nearly $1 million and allowing the ISRC to continue developing sexuality education resources and tools to be used in community programs for black gay and bisexual men.
The $262,000 extension of the ACCELERATE! Making Sex Ed Relevant grant will continue funding the ISRC’s work through December 2019, as the team focuses on the health and well-being of black men who have sex with men in Baltimore, Maryland and Jackson, Mississippi. Both cities ranked in the top 10 for the highest HIV diagnosis rate in the nation in 2014.
In addition, the ISRC also recently received a mini-grant of $25,000 from ViiV to collaborate with Jackson State University, a historically-black university, to create an implementation plan for the toolkit.
New admin/finance VP named at Widener
CHESTER >> Widener University announced the appointment of Linda Kiraly Gilbert as assistant vice president for administration and finance. Gilbert will begin her new position Nov. 12.
As assistant vice president, Gilbert will be responsible for the university’s Academic Financial Review model, compiling and analyzing the financial results of academic and administrative functions. She will also assist Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance Joseph J. Baker with his role overseeing the university’s administrative functions.
Gilbert comes to Widener from LaSalle University, where she serves as assistant vice president of finance & administration. Prior to that, she worked as budget director for The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
