Haas, 64, leads by two in Champions playoff opener

RICHMOND, VA. >> Jay Haas shot a 7-under 65 — missing his age by a stroke — to take a two-shot lead Saturday in the PGA Tour Champions’ playoff-opening Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

Trying to become the oldest winner in tour history, the 64-year-old Haas birdied the par-5 16th and 18th holes to get to 11-under 133 on The Country Club of Virginia’s James River Course.

Mike Fetchick set the age record of 63 years to the day in the 1985 Hilton Head event. Haas is second on the list, taking the 2016 Toshiba Classic at 62 years,

10 months, 7 days for his

18th senior title.

Ciganda shoots 67

SHANGHAI >> Carlota Ciganda of Spain shot a

5-under 67 to share the lead with Sei Young Kim after the third round of the LPGA Shanghai.

Ciganda carded her fifth birdie of the day on the par-4

18th to finish tied with overnight leader Kim at 11-under

205. Kim shot a 71 with four bogeys and five birdies.

Koepka leads by 4

JEJU ISLAND, SOUTH KOREA >> Brooks Koepka has improved his chances of taking over as No. 1 golfer in the world, shooting a bogeyfree 5-under 67 Saturday for a four-stroke lead after three rounds of the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges.

Koepka had a threeround total of 13-under

203. Ian Poulter, who shot

68 Saturday, was tied for second place with secondroun­d leader Scott Piercy, who had a 72.

Nemechek wins

KANSAS CITY, KAN. >> John Hunter Nemechek overcame a couple late mistakes and then drove away from title contender Daniel Hemric late in the race at Kansas Speedway to earn his first Xfinity Series win. Hemric finished second while the rest of the playoff field got a major shakeup following a crash on the opening lap.

The green flag had just dropped on the first race in the third round of the playoffs when Justin Allgaier got into Christophe­r Bell, who then backed into the wall. Allgaier took the blame for the crash, saying “that was one me.”

Burfict fined $112K

NEW YORK >> The NFL fined Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict $112,000 for multiple unnecessar­y roughness penalties in Cincinnati’s loss to Pittsburgh last Sunday.

Burfict has been fined

$315,000 during his sevenyear NFL career and was suspended for four games to begin this season for violating the e league’s policy on performanc­e enhances.

Modzelewsk­i dies

Dick Modzelewsk­i, a star defensive tackle who appeared in eight NFL titles game with the Giants and Browns during the 1950s and ‘60s, has died. He was 87.

He died Friday at his home in Eastlake, Ohio, outside Cleveland, the Giants said in a statement Saturday. No cause was given.

Modzelewsk­i spent 14 years in the NFL, eight with the Giants that included six title games. He teamed with Andy Robustelli, Rosey Grier and Jim Katcavage on one of the great defensive lines.

Modzelewsk­i also appeared in two championsh­ip games with the Browns. He joined the NFL with Washington in 1953 and also played for Pittsburgh.
