Flood’s goal makes Sacred Heart upset sweet, complete

The task was a daunting one for Sacred Heart. The Lions had to take on a Springfiel­d-Montco team that had scored 11 times in its last three victories. Sacred Heart’s defense was up to the task.

Sarah Terzian controlled the backfield and goalie Gigi Backe made 10 saves as the sixth-seeded Lions upset the third-seeded Spartans 1-0 in the opening round of the District 1 Class A field hockey playoffs.

Julia Flood scored off a pass from Danielle Santora on a corner with 16:04 to play in regulation for the winner. Sacred Heart (7-11) visits second-seeded Jenkintown Thursday in the semifinals. The Drakes (16-1-1) topped Villa Joseph Marie, 5-1.

Class 2A

It did not take Radnor long to get its high-powered offense in gear Tuesday afternoon.

The top-seeded Raiders scored three times in the first seven minutes and cruised to a 6-0 victory over Central League rival Marple Newtown in the opening round of the tournament.

The win extended Radnor’s win streak to 15 games and sent the Raiders into Thursday’s quarterfin­als against eightseede­d Merion Mercy. The Bears knocked off ninth-seeded Wissahicko­n, 4-1.

Page Lowry and Olivia Shea scored two goals each for the Raiders (15-3), who have outscored their opponents, 81-9, in the winning streak. Margaret Mooney put home a pass from Barb Civitella 3:40 in to get the scoring started. O’Shea and Brigid Lowry found the back of the net in the next three minutes to break the game open. Page Lowry tallied the first of her two goals to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead at halftime.

While the offense clicked, the defense did not allow a shot on goal. Anna Lemaster made 11 saves in goal for the Tigers. VILLA MARIA 15, SPRINGFIEL­D 0 >> Hannah Miller scored five times in the first half, and Adele Iacobucci and Mary Harks added two goals and an assist each as the second-seeded Hurricanes built a 10-0 lead at halftime. Villa Maria hosts the winner of the Bishop Shanahan-Harriton game in Thursday’s quarterfin­als.
