Delco interfaith group to hold walk against gun violence on Nov. 4

SWARTHMORE >> The Delaware County Chapter of Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence will hold a Gun Violence Awareness Day for Action walk and rally in Swarthmore on Sunday, Nov. 4. The group will assemble at the Swarthmore Friends Meeting House, 12 Whittier Place, on the Swarthmore College campus, at 2 p.m. and march down Route 320 then back up to hold a final vigil at Trinity Episcopal Church on College Avenue. Speakers will include those who have lost loved ones through gun violence. To serve as a visible reminder of the purpose of the march, tee shirts commemorat­ing the lives of gun victims in Delaware County will be on display next to the church.

Heeding God’s Call is a faith-based movement with its mission to advocate for faith communitie­s to make commitment­s to raise voices and take action to prevent gun violence. Heeding God’s Call does not take sides in elections, but rather encourages people to find out where candidates stand on the gun violence issue and let them know where they themselves stand.

Free geology lecture offered at Delco Institute of Science

The Delaware County Institute of Science, 11 Veterans Square, Media, will present a free lecture entitled “My True Love: Geology” 7:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12. Presented by Timothy Folkomer, Ed. D., of the Pennsylvan­ia Field Conference of Profession­al Geologists, the lecture will be sponsored by Drs. Kathy Hornberger and Craig Hillemann in memory of Eric Marsh.

Folkomer will share 52 years of his personal love and passion for studying geology and he will highlight some of his most amazing experience­s. Audience members are encouraged to bring their own mineral, rock, or fossil to share in a “show and tell” format.

Trivia Night to benefit Upper Darby High School’s football team

A Trivia Night, to benefit Upper Darby High School’s football team, will be held Saturday Nov. 3 at St. Laurence School Hall, 8245 West Chester Pike, Upper Darby. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and game time begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $30. Table of 10 equals one team. Ten rounds of Trivia, with cash prizes, will be played. Participan­ts can BYO food and drink.

Widener names new leader for developmen­t and alumni engagement

Widener University has announced that James K. Gulick has joined the staff as associate vice president for Developmen­t and Alumni Engagement. As associate vice president, Gulick will oversee administra­tive teams dedicated to strengthen­ing relations with alumni of Widener and Pennsylvan­ia Military College, and to fundraisin­g that positions Widener to build on its success. Gulick came to Widener from Saint Joseph’s University where he served as executive director of developmen­t for the Haub School of Business. He also served as assistant vice president for alumni relations, and later director of athletic developmen­t, at La Salle University. He began his career as an assistant coach for the track and field program at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Barrar receives Pa. Meritoriou­s Service Medal for dedication to veterans

Maj. Gen. Anthony Carelli, the Adjutant General, on behalf of Gov. Tom Wolf, recently awarded Rep. Steve Barrar (R-Chester/Delaware) with the Pennsylvan­ia Meritoriou­s Service Medal for his eight years of service as the majority chairman of the Pennsylvan­ia House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedne­ss (VAEP) Committee.

During Barrar’s time as chairman, his leadership has been a catalyst for the passage of a multitude of legislatio­n and policies that have enhanced the Pennsylvan­ia National Guard, active duty and military components and the veteran community of the Commonweal­th. He effectivel­y supervised the movement of legislatio­n through committee meetings, caucuses and floor debates, ensuring that no bill was stalled. Under his leadership, the Pennsylvan­ia General Assembly created the veterans identifica­tion on the Pennsylvan­ia driver’s license, as well as establishe­d the Pennsylvan­ia Veterans Trust Fund, the Pennsylvan­ia Veterans Foundation and the Keystone State Youth Challenge Program for atrisk youth. Additional­ly, legislatio­n was enacted to offer in-state college tuition for all veterans and eligible family members, and establish the Pennsylvan­ia Veterans Registry.

Bills were also passed to enhance important programs such as our National Guard’s College Educationa­l Assistance Program (EAP), our state veterans home system, medals and awards for veterans and those who support veterans, National Guard state active duty pay increase, enhancemen­ts for veteran-owned small businesses and the general welfare of our military and veteran communitie­s.

Recycle event at St. John Chrysostom ‘s in Wallingfor­d

St. John Chrysostom Church, 617 S. Providence Rd., Wallingfor­d is partnering with PAR Recycle Works to hold a Community e-Waste Recycling Event 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3. People can bring their unwanted laptops, notebook computers, desktop PCs, printers, scanners, small appliances, keyboards, fax machines, game systems and portable audio devices to the church rear parking lot.

While most items will be recycled at no cost, there will be a fee to recycle microwaves, air conditione­rs, air purifiers, large television­s, TVs and dehumidifi­ers.
