100 Years Ago – 1918: The entire Republican state ticket yesterday was elected in Pennsylvan­ia with state Sen. William C. Sproul winning for governor over Eugene C. Bonniwell, Democrat, by 250,000 votes. Twenty-seven of the

32 district congressme­n will be Republican.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Federal agents today in Philadelph­ia announced the arrest of a man accused of supplying marijuana cigarettes to soldiers in the Army and said he had done a nationwide mail-order business at prices ranging from 25 cents to $1 per cigarette. The 24-yearold was held for a federal grand jury after Berkeley, Calif., military police intercepte­d a package, containing 300 cigarettes addressed to a soldier.

50 Years Ago – 1968: A heavy turnout of Delaware County voters selected Richard M. Nixon as their presidenti­al choice Tuesday, although his margin of less than 25,000 votes over Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey fell far short of GOP expectatio­ns. But Nixon’s showing was one of the few surprises in the county balloting, which included the defeat of the proposed county health department by an 89,93863,5559 vote and the election of all Republican candidates. Nixon’s margin, about half of what the GOP expected, still was a considerab­le improvemen­t over his 9,706 victory margin in the county over John F. Kennedy in 1960.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Chester’s new program to pay reward money for crime informatio­n scored its first victory Thursday with the arrest of two accused killers, Police Chief James B. Clark said. Ian B. Lennox, president of the Citizens Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley, announced Oct. 29 that his organizati­on would pay up to $1,000 for informatio­n leading to the arrest of people who commit violent crimes in Chester. Clark said the tip line review two calls that led police to arrest suspected wanted for the Aug. 28 drive-by shooting death of Ronald “Rock” Womack, 27, in the 400 block of Grounsell Court in the William Penn Homes.

10 Years Ago – 2008: The unofficial returns from Tuesday night’s election show that not only did president-elect Sen. Barack Obama carry the county, he did so by overwhelmi­ng figures. Across Pennsylvan­ia, the Illinois Democrat won 55 percent of the vote with 99 percent of precincts reporting, the first Democratic to break the 51 percent barrier in the Keystone State since

1968.
