100 Years Ago – 1918: It took less than an hour for the Times yesterday to sell more than 20,000 copies giving the news of the signing of the peace armistice on the part of Germany. Fewer than 60 minutes went by after the (premature, incorrect) news came from Paris over the cable, when the Times was on the street with the first peace edition. It was what the people wanted. The picture of Christ on the first page touched the hearts of the people. The second edition followed in an hour, and the third edition appeared in less than an hour after this, with still more news.

75 Years Ago – 1943: From the Chestergrams column: Whiskey – without standing in line for hours – was passed up by a large portion of the 73,000 persons who witnessed the Penn-Navy classic Saturday afternoon. A young lad stood on a street corner holding aloft a one-third filled whiskey bottle and offering it for sale, but the hungry, anxious-to-get-home throng surged past him with just a glance and a smile.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Hawaiian Adventure – a fabulous 14-day excursion to Las Vegas, Hawaii and San Francisco – has been made available to Delaware County Daily Times readers at a special cut-rate price. The once-in-a-lifetime trip, a true luxury vacation at bargain rates, is being offered to Daily Times readers for $599, plus $24.50 tax. The tour will be headed by Daily Times Sports Editor Ed Gebhart.

25 Years Ago – 1993: A Maryland man and two friends said they were robbed at gunpoint and beaten in the Ruth L. Bennett Homes early Saturday morning, according to police. The 22-year-old man, of Chestertown, said he and his friends were trying to visit a friend and that a man they asked for directions sent them into the project. He said that a group of about 10 men with a shotgun and handguns took $600 from him and $200 from a 20-year-old Chestertown resident. A 22-yearold Sharon Hill man lost $4 and his clothes, police said. After the robbery, the men were hit over the head with the guns.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Chester High School’s Robotics Team competed in the 2008 Philadelphia BEST Hub Robotics Competition held at the High School of the Future in West Philadelphia. This was Chester’s second year competing in the annual event. The 12-member team competed among 21 middle and high schools from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland in an exciting and fun-filled day of demonstrating their science, technology and engineering prowess.
