WW I program set at Rose Valley Museum

-

ROSE VALLEY >> Rose Valley Museum and Historical Society will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I Sunday, when curator Ryan Berley will present a lecture on “Trench Arts & Crafts: Soldier Art of World War One.” The talk will tie together the little-known link between the Arts & Crafts movement of the period and The Great War.

The war produced mountains of material and the soldiers used their idle time to create trench art from scraps of metal and remnants of munitions. A cottage economy developed as soldiers from many nations worked the scraps into flower vases and objects of beauty. At the same time, professional and itinerant craftsmen working in the Arts & Crafts tradition were making similar pieces back home.

Berley has been re-enacting and collecting World War I pieces for 25 years and will use them to illustrate the talk, beginning 4 p.m. at Thunderbird Lodge, 41 Rose Valley Road. An exhibition of his collection will be on view through April 2019.

The donation for the event is $20 per person ($15 for members). A reception will follow. For more information visit rosevalleymuseum.org or email info@RoseValleyMuseum.org.
