Saunders’ scoring outburst leads to McNichol’s first win

Nafisa Saunders scored

33 points to go with 10 rebounds and four assists to lead Neumann to an 85-75 win over Wilkes in the season-opener Thursday, the first win for former Academy of Notre Dame coach Mary Beth McNichol as coach of the Knights.

Maia Bryson added 16 points, and Chelsea Keebler tallied 12 for the Knights, who shot 46.7 percent (14for-30) from 3-point land. UMBC 81, EASTERN 42 >> Jaelyn Harris scored 13 points, and Bria Rivers notched 11 off the bench, but the Eagles were no match for the Retrievers, who got points from 13 players and led by

25 points at halftime.

Men’s Basketball

Dwayne Coleman posted a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds off the bench, and reserve Bryce Barrouk poured in 18 points as Penn State-Brandywine downed Widener, 87-79.

Isiah Cook scored 15 points, Anthony Lattanzi added 11 points and Josh Smith paired nine points with seven rebounds and four assists for the Lions.

Elijah Boyd paced Widener with 17 points before fouling out. Tyler Drews chipped in 16 points, and Connor Laverty supplied 10. NEUMANN 75, KEAN 66 >> Whaeem Lowman tallied 17 points, and Aaron Johnson-Chavis patrolled the lane with 11 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks as the Knights used a 15-3 run to start the second half in reversing a halftime deficit.

Dewey Johnson scored 15 points, and Isaiah Wilmore chipped in 10 points for the Knights.
