Alston scores 30, sparks Temple

PHILADELPH­IA >> Shizz Alston Jr. scored a career-high 30 points and one of his seven

3-pointers sparked a 15-0 run in the second half as Temple surged past Detroit Mercy

83-67 in the Legend Classic on Friday night. The Haverford School All-Delco is the first Temple player to score 30 in a game since 2016. Quinton Rose added 17 points and Nate Pierre-Louis 10 with three steals.

An Alston 3-pointer pushed the Owls (2-0), who trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, into a 49-48 lead with 16:11 left in the game. SAINT JOSEPH’S 79, OLD DOMINION 64 >> Charlie Brown scored 20 points, and Pierfrance­sco Oliva scored 17 with 14 rebounds and Saint Joseph’s (1-0) beat Old Dominion.

Brown was 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range in his return to the lineup. The sophomore redshirted last season after undergoing surgery to his left wrist.

PENN 92, RICE 76 >> A.J. Brodeur scored 23 points and Jake Silpe added a career-high 16 as Penn won its second straight game to start the season, knocking off Rice (1-1).

The game was a homecoming both for Rice coach Scott Pera, a former assistant coach with the Quakers, and graduate transfer Dylan Jones, a four-year player at Penn before transferri­ng to Rice. EASTERN MICHIGAN 66, DREXEL 62 >> Paul Jackson scored 20 points with six assists, Boubacar Toure had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Eastern Michigan (2-0) beat Drexel (0-1).
