100 Years Ago – 1918: Attending a christening upon the strength of verbal invitation given by a friend, rather than accepting the written invitation issued by the parents proved rather an exciting episode on Saturday for a resident of the

100block of Engle Street, who was beaten about the head with a washboard and an aluminum steam cooker. The man attracted by the supply of liquid refreshments that are in the majority of cases on hand when christenings are held, was only too eager to be on hand. During the evening he became the target for blows during a free-for-all that ensued following an argument. He and another sel-finvited guest were then ejected.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Complete and colorful dramatization of “The Wizard of Oz” is the Swarthmore Players Club’s second offering of the season for children at the clubhouse, Fairview and Chester roads. A huge cast, colorfully costumed for the eight scenes of the play gives an air of pageantry to the stages which appeal even to the little children who may not be able to follow the simple plot.

50Years Ago – 1968: One of the finest broken field runs at the St. James-St. Thomas More football game ended in a fumble and an arrest Sunday. Two Ridley Township youths broke away from the PMC College’s Stadium in Chester with the $20football after grabbing it following an extra-point try. Pursued by Patrolman Joseph Bingnear, they fumbled the ball in Washington Park after he fired a warning shot and were caught a few minutes later.

25Years Ago – 1993: Shoppers who haven’t been inside Granite Run Mall for awhile are in for an $8million surprise. New stores. New ceilings, skylights and floors. New entrances. New escalators and new foundations in Center Court. The additions are all part of an extensive renovation project designed to reestablish the 20-year-old mall as one of the region’s premier shopping centers. In 1990, mall management was forced to hold a town meeting to deny rumors that it was in danger of closing. The arrival of Boscov’s to occupy the former Stern’s site has been crucial to its resurgence.

10Years Ago – 2008: Nearly

200Girl Scouts from the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania helped to open their new Delaware County Service Center in grand fashion on Sunday. The ceremony celebrated the service center’s move to a spacious building next to Strayer University in Springfield and out from a tiny room underneath the Borders Bookstore on Baltimore Pike.
