Solid foul shooting powers Widener to tourney title

All that work at the foul line paid off for the Widener men’s basketball team Saturday.

The Pride shot 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 67 seconds to hold off Gwynedd Mercy, 78-76, in the championsh­ip game of the Widener Tip-Off for Autism Awareness tournament.

Tyler Drews scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds to earn MVP honors. Pat Holden (13 points) and Jared Peters (team-high

15 points) also were named to the all-tournament team for the Pride. Jalen Howard and Elijah Boyd chipped in with 11 points each. ROSEMONT 85, HAVERFORD 59 >> Basil Thompson scored 25 of his game-high 34 points in the second half to lead the Ravens to their first win of the season. Jalil Myers added 13 of his 19 points as Rosemont put up 47 points in the final 20 minutes.

Jesse Turkson scored

23 points and Joe Scibelli added 13 as the Fords (2-1) fell for the first time. SWARTHMORE 88, DELAWARE VALLEY 55 >> Cam Wiley scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for the Garnet. George Visconti added 16 points, Colin Shaw

12 and Ryan Ingram 11. CABRINI 90, HOUGHTON 73 >> Freshman Voshon Mack had

20 points and 14 rebounds to help the Cavaliers pick up their first win of the season in the consolatio­n game of the Chuck Rensler Invitation­al at Rochester. Billy Warren added nine points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

EASTERN 68, MARYVILLE 65 >> Austin Duncan poured in a game-high 20 points to lead four players in double figures and send the Eagles into the championsh­ip game of the Maryville (Tenn.) Tournament. Darius Washington (15 points, seven rebounds), Michael Bowlers

(11 points, 10 rebounds) and Draig Ruff (11 points) also came up big for Eastern. NEUMANN 73, FARMINGDAL­E STATE 62 >> Jordan Collins collected 15 points and seven rebounds to send the Knights into the championsh­ip game of the Stockton Classic. Neumann will take on host Stockton, a 7267 winner over York in the final.

Aaron Johnson-Chavis added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Raquan BrownJohns­on and Mark Perry contribute­d 10 points each for Neumann.

Women’s Basketball

Maddie Gallic dropped in a layup with 13 seconds left and Katie Cook made a steal on the ensuing possession to preserve a 55-51 Haverford victory over Washington & Lee in the first round of the Terry Greene Tip-Off Classic at Franklin and Marshall. Macy Goldbach poured in 16 points to lead the Fords. She also had eight rebounds. Cook added

11 points while Gallic finished with 10.

WIDENER 74, FERRUM 49 >> Devin Rimmer scored 13 points and was named to the McDaniel Tip-Off Classic all-tournament team to help the Pride get off to a 4-0 start for the first time since

2012-13. Kyra Schenk added

10 points.

NEUMANN 82, HOOD 75 >> The Knights went on an 8-1 run at the start of overtime to advance to the championsh­ip of their tip-off tournament. Nafisa Saunders hit 24 of 30 foul shots to pace Neumann with a game-high 36 points. Minka Glenn added

16 points and 13 rebounds, and Maia Bryson chipped in with 12 points.

The Knights face Western New England in the tourney title game Sunday. MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE

88, CHEYNEY 39 >> Bairesha Gill-Miles scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace the Shorehawks to their first win of the season. Shania Stamper topped the Wolves with 13 points. MORAVIAN 61, EASTERN 58 >> The Eagles cut a 21-point deficit to one twice, but could not complete the comeback in the championsh­ip game of the Kean Classic. Regie Robinson led Eastern with

18 points and 15 rebounds. Jaelyn Harris pitched in with 16 points.

GOUCHER 61, CABRINI 57 >> The Gophers scored the final four points to top the Cavaliers in the Swarthmore Tip-Off.

Lexi Edwards paced Cabrini with 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Kate Lannon (Sun Valley) added 13 points and five assists, while Nomi Washington had 11 points and 11 boards. WESLEYAN 82, SWARTHMORE 59 >> The Cardinals led from start to finish in the Swarthmore Tip-Off. Elizabeth Stiles scored a careerhigh 15 points for the Garnet, while Kendall Tribus grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.

PENN 85, NJIT 42 >> Ashley Russell led all players with

25 points to pace the Quakers. Russell shot 10-for-13 overall and 4-for-4 from

3-point range. She also had eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and no turnovers in 26 minutes. TOWSON 92, LA SALLE 68 >> Deja King (15 points), Michelle Nicholls and Kayla Spruill (11 points each) led the way for the Explorers.
