End comes for Swarthmore women, Eastern men
It was the end of the road for Swarthmore and Eastern in the NCAA Division III soccer tournaments Saturday.
No. 12 Swarthmore’s playoff run came to an end in a 2-0 loss to No. 3 Middlebury in the Sweet 16 of the women’s tournament, while Eastern dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 9 Rochester in the Sweet 16 on the men’s side.
Ellie Greenberg scored in the
62nd minute and Eliza Robinson found the back of the net in the
84th minute to send the Panthers
(17-1-3) into Sunday’s regional final against Misericordia, which topped Hardin-Simmons on penalty kicks.
Middlebury’s defense proved too tough as the Panthers limited the Garnet (17-3-2) to two shots on goal. Goalie Ursula Alwang handled both shots. Senior goalie Amy Shymos made a season-high seven saves for Swarthmore.
Senior Marin McCoy closed out her career with program records for goals (57), assists points (149) in a career.
Eastern (18-3-2) faced the same issue with Rochester. The Yellowjackets (15-2-2) allowed just one shot on goal to set up an Elite Eight meeting with Messiah for the second year in a row.
Eastern’s best scoring opportunity came in the first half when (35) and Jake Stankey volleyed a low corner kick from Andrew Fenstermacher toward the near post. Rochchester goalie Patrick Conway was able to smother the shot to keep the game scoreless.
