DCIU appoints new tech school principal
MORTON >> The Delaware County Intermediate Unit (DCIU) Board of Directors recently approved the appointment of Daniel Palmer as the new principal of the Delaware County Technical High Folcroft Campus at its November meeting.
Palmer, who begins his new role with the IU on December 3, is currently the Assistant Principal at Sun Valley High School in Aston, a position he has held since 2014. Prior to that he was an assistant principal at Garnet Valley Middle School in Glen Mills, from
2009-2014, and a guidance counselor there from 20072009. Palmer’s teaching experience includes stints as a middle school math teacher at Garnet Valley and Engle Middle School in West Grove.
Palmer is currently working on his Doctorate in Educational Leadership which he expects to receive in early 2019 from Neumann University. He received his
K-12 School Principal Certificate from St. Joseph’s University, his Master of Education in Secondary Guidance from Widener University and his Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from West Chester University. Palmer also has several other certifications and is a member of numerous professional associations including the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the American School Counselor Association.
Palmer said that it is his goal to continue and build upon the rich tradition at the vocational and technical school in preparing Delaware County’s students for the next phase of their lives, whether it be career or continued education.
Country Gardeners to hold annual holiday greens sale at Tyler Arboretum
The Country Gardeners will hold their annual Holiday Greens Sale to shop for fresh, natural decorations and unique handmade gifts and crafts 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Tyler Arboretum, 515 Painter Rd., Media, inside of Tyler’s barn.
The sale will feature festive greenery of many kinds, including evergreen wreaths with traditional pinecones that can be used on doors, mangles or as large candle rings. This year, magnolia wreaths will also be available. Additionally, classically-designed holiday centerpieces and table top Christmas trees will be available to purchase as well as greens for holiday baskets and arrangements, English “kissing balls” made up of boxwood, evergreens, berries and holly and holiday mug arrangements and pots of paperwhites for gift-giving. Delco comedian opens for Jimmy Carroll in Baby Boomers show
Delaware County resident Todd Chappelle will open for nationally known comedian Jimmy Carroll at the Kennett Flash Theater ibn Kennett Square, 8 p.m. Friday Nov. 23. Carroll’s show is called “The Last of the Boomers,” a humous stroll down memory lane, looking at where Baby Boomers have been, touching on things like cars made of metal, TV’s with antennas, Sears tough skins and eating waxed lips. Carroll has been a professional comedian for the last 35 years. His clean, clever, observational humor has landed him on Comedy Central, A&E, ESPN II, PBS and in the movies.
Chappelle of Chadds Ford is a comedy songwriter who does a mix of funny original songs and parodies. Chappelle’s music has been heard on The Dr. Demento Show, CNN Radio, the BBC and Good Day Philadelphia, along with radio stations in six states. He is the winner of the 2015 Delmarva Folk Hero contest, and he appeared in the
2015 PBS specials “DelaWhere?” and “Dela-Where?

GFWC Woman’s Club of Newtown Square honors ‘November Student of Month’
GFWC Woman’s Club of Newtown Square recently honored Rachel Horn, a senior at Marple Newtown High School (MNHS), as their Student of the Month for November. Rachel is the daughter of Brian and Rita Horn and was selected by the MNHS English Department.
According to the GFWC Woman’s Club, which bestowed the honor at its recent luncheon at LaLocanda Restaurant, “Rachel has been a positive force in the high school since her freshmen year. She is a member of the concert band, jazz band and marching band, acting as head woodwind and captain of MNHS marching band, as well as, president of the TriM Marching Honor Society. She is also involved in the Poetry Club and a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Yearbook Club.”
Traditional Slavic Christmas dinner open to public
Holy Myrrh Bears Eastern Catholic Church, Fairview Rd., Swarthmore, will hold a traditional Slavic Christmas dinner 12 noon Sunday, Dec. 2. Cost is $15 for adults, $8 for children 8-12 and free for children under 7, all advance sales only.
