100 Years Ago – 1918: On Nov. 15, the teachers and pupils of the McCay School were transferre­d to the new Horace Mann School. Miss Harriet M. Orr, the McCay teacher, now is in charge of a third grade in the new Horace Mann School, and the former

14 McCay pupils have been put into their proper grades in the Mann School. Those pupils are thus entirely with their own grades, and get much more instructio­n suited to their individual needs than was possible while one teacher had four of five classes.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Delaware County residents may read the latest news and their favorite Chester Times features after their Thanksgivi­ng dinners on Thursday as the Times will be published on that day. Fastmoving developmen­ts on the war and the desire to keep its readers up to the minute on events of the day have prompted the decision to publish on Thursday. Employees, who were given an extra holiday on Labor Day in anticipati­on of the Thanksgivi­ng editions, will still be able to enjoy their turkey and fixin’s in the afternoon.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Eight of Folcroft’s 10 school crossing guards didn’t show up for work today in an apparent “sick call” campaign for more money. The eight guards, who want a raise from $2 to $2.50 an hour, reported sick this morning because borough officials have refused to schedule a meeting on the pay hike requests, one spokesman said.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Chester City Council is expected to postpone action on a tax overhaul ordinance while it studies both the effect on home tax bills and the possibilit­y of a citywide property reassessme­nt, Councilman Ed Zetusky said. The city gave first approval Nov. 12to an ordinance that would drop the city property assessment, on which city taxes are now based, adopt the county assessment of city tax purposes and tax on 100percent of market value. That move would likely drop the millage rate drasticall­y but produce the same tax bills as this year’s.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Aston Township commission­ers unanimousl­y appointed Sgt. Daniel Ruggieri chief of police at a recent meeting. He has been serving as acting chief since the retirement of former Chief Albert Fasano. Ruggieri was born and raised in Eddystone. He resides in Aston with his wife, Gina, and two sons, Daniel and Josh. Prior to his appointmen­t in 1992 as a full-time officer in Aston, he served as a part-time officer in Colwyn.
