100 Years Ago – 1918: The new chapel building of the First Presbyteri­an Church, which has been erected at 23rd Street and Edgmont Avenue in Chester, will be open for public worship tomorrow evening. The building is of frame constructi­on and is intended only for temporary use, or until such conditions prevail as will permit the erection of the permanent building.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Wage increases for two groups of Delaware County workers were approved by the Regional War Labor Board. A general wage increase of 5 cents per hour was granted to 200 employees of A.H. Wirz, Inc., manufactur­ers of collapsibl­e metal tubes, 2300 W. Fourth St., Chester. Services workers employed by Warner Brothers Theatres in Chester and Prospect Park were granted an increase of 50 cents per hour. Their average hourly earnings at present is 43 cents. Theatres affected in include the Stanley, State, and Washington in Chester, and the Manor in Prospect Park.

50 Years Ago – 1968: State police have arrested three men and two youths in connection with the July 3 “blue tattoo” slaying of John Edward Gentry, a 28-year-old Lower Chichester housepaint­er. His body was discovered July 4 by a horseback rider about

200 feet off the east side of Bethel Road in Concord. His identity was unknown, with police releasing descriptio­ns of blue tattoos on the arms and wrists.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Folcroft police are seeking anyone with informatio­n on three men who handcuffed an electronic­s store clerk in a bathroom last week and fled with a large quantity of merchandis­e form the Delcroft Shopping Center. About 8 p.m. Thursday, the men entered Linsk Electronic­s and grabbed a 69-year-old clerk from behind, placed duct tape on his eyes and mouth and handcuffed to pipes in the bathroom.

10 Years Ago – 2008: Upper Chichester Police are asking for help identifyin­g the suspect who stole 1,000 Vicodin pills from the CVS on Chichester Avenue last week. The suspect entered the store and headed straight for the closed pharmacy counter. The store manager saw the man walking around the closed pharmacy area, grabbing the security gate and pulling on it. When the manager went to get a phone, he heard a loud bang. He went to investigat­e and saw that the door to the pharmacy had been kicked in.
