100 Years Ago – 1918: From the editorial board: There are conditions existing in the police department of this city that require a remedy. It is obvious that present conditions can no longer prevail and the morale of the force be maintained. Disciple and the property respect for superior officers are lacking, and these conditions are not without cause, so it is said. During the period of the war, with its many requirements, the mayor’s time has been largely occupied, but there is now no reason to feel this important matter may not be taken up. In fact, it is imperative.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Chester gave 176 pints to the Red Cross blood bank Monday. That, in a nutshell, tells the story of how the men and women of this area backed their fighting men in the first day of the three-day blood donor drive that continues today and Wednesday in the St. Paul’s parish house at Ninth and Madison streets.

An Interstate Commerce Commission spokesman said the firm exceeded the territorial scope of the certificate it held from the ICC. The company transported beer from a brewery in Baltimore, Md., to a distillery in Westbury Long Island, N.Y., on a number of occasions between November 1967 to February 1968. 25 Years Ago – 1993: Saying voters should know where the buck begins and ends, Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Greenwood, of Bucks County, said he will introduce a measure that would ban the use of so-called street money in federal and perhaps state and local elections. “What you’re buying is not assistance,” he said. “What you’re buying is allegiance with that cash.” The lawmaker said the measure would prohibit the distribution of cash payments for election-day campaign activities, including get-outthe-vote drives and “ballot security” efforts prevalent in Philadelphia. 10 Years Ago – 2008: State police arrested three men in connection with numerous thefts from unlocked vehicles in the vicinity of Mohawk Court in Thornbury. Trooper Erin Jason responded about 3:44 a.m. Thursday on reports of a suspicious vehicle driving around the neighborhood. Upon investigation, it was found that numerous unlocked vehicles had been entered and items removed, including a bag of change with the word “Cigar” on the front. The latter item was found in plain view in a 2008 dark red Toyota Scion with Delaware registration containing three occupants, police said.
