100 Years Ago – 1918: The barking of a pet dog saved the lives of 20resident­s in the “Greystone’ apartment house, Fifth and Madison streets, yesterday morning about five o’clock. The handsome stone structure was almost destroyed by fire and the loss is estimated at

$50,000. The dwelling was owned by Isaac Greenberg, of the Green Theatre.

75Years Ago – 1943: County schoolboy gridiron warriors, most of them heading for bigger warfare in the near future, brought an amazing war-time football campaign to a close today with eight scholastic encounters within Delaware County’s own boundaries this morning. Topping the Thanksgivi­ng Day morning pastiming was the 35th annual extravagan­za between Chester and Media, being played before more than 5,000fans at the PMC Stadium, 15th and Chestnut streets. Attracting almost as many fans was the neighborin­g duel between the brother-coached teams of Eddystone and Ridley Township on the latter’s field. The Green Raiders and the Stoners are coached by brothers Phil and Dom Marion and considered two of the best schoolboy teams in the county.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Ninth grade students of Brookhaven and the Northley junior high schools will hear an airlines representa­tive Tuesday at the vocational program. William Lush will address Brookhaven students at 11 a.m. and the Northley students at 1p.m.

25 Years Ago – 1993: The generosity of the community made a small miracle possible yesterday at CityTeam Ministries in Chester, where about

700homeles­s and needy families received Thanksgivi­ng food boxes. Less than two weeks ago, CityTeam Director Rev. Richard Williams reported that the rescue mission at Seventh and Sproul streets had received donations of only 22 turkeys, and the demand for holiday food boxes was 10 times what it was last year. “When word went out … we had people all the way down to Dover, Del., who came up to make donations.

10 Years Ago – 2008: City residents will soon be able to quell their late-night cravings at a new 7-Eleven convenienc­e store in Chester. The store is the most recent business to come into the $50 million University Crossings project at 15th Street and Providence Avenue. It also houses a Best Western Hotel and residentia­l apartments, with more businesses and a Chester Police substation to follow. “Chester, I think, hit its bottom a few years ago, and I think this is an important location,” said Ahsan Nasratulla­h, CEO of Teres Hodlings LLC, which is leasing the land from Widener. “People are taking a fresh look at it.”
