Donations sought for 4th annual ‘Shop with Sheriff’ event

4th Annual Shop with a Sheriff event planned for Saturday, Dec. 8. Last year, The Sheriff’s Office, with the help of many generous individual­s and local businesses, were able to host

50 disadvanta­ged children from local schools to a day of holiday shopping at the Walmart in Marple. The children and Deputies enjoyed a shopping spree and visit with Santa, followed by a lunch and wrapping party in the Delaware County Courthouse Cafeteria.

The funds raised last year enabled each child to receive a a $100 gift card, which they used to buy gifts for family members, and maybe a little something for themselves. To make a donation, send a check made out to DCPSRU, 1400 North Providence Ave., Bldg. 2 Suite

‘The Front Page’ opens at Spotlight Theatre Friday

The American comedy classic “The Front Page” will open Friday, Nov. 30 and runs for seven performanc­es through December 15 at Spotlight Theatre in Swarthmore. Directed by Kathy Quinn of Clifton Heights, the show stars Rich Geller of Secane as scheming newspaper editor Walter Burns and Ryan Mattox of Lansdowne as crackerjac­k reporter Hildy Johnson. They reprise the roles made famous by Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon in the acclaimed 1974 Billy Wilder film version of the play. A stellar lineup of area actors bring the wise-cracking antics of a 1920’s Chicago tabloid news scandal to the local stage. Chester native receives Philadelph­ia Business Journal award

Marrea Walker-Smith, president and owner of CEO Academy for Youth, received the 2018 Philadelph­ia Business Journal, Woman of Distinctio­n Award on November 15 at the Sheraton Society Hill in Philadelph­ia. According to the Philadelph­ia Business Journal, 36 out of 300 women were selected to receive the award which recognizes female leaders who made a difference in their communitie­s, blazed a trail for others and are leaving a mark on Philadelph­ia business.

In May 2018, WalkerSmit­h was recognized by Main Line Today Magazine as a 2018 Healthcare Hero with 14 other medical profession­als who are tackling some of modern medicine’s toughest challenges.

Walker-Smith, who founded the education start-up CEO Academy for Youth in 2017, has experience­d rapid growth. CEO Academy for Youth partners with top industry leaders to develop career explorator­y programs in healthcare, technology, engineerin­g, forensic science, business, and environmen­tal science. Most recently, Walker-Smith was contracted by Chester County Economic Developmen­t Council (CCEDC) to help build their STEM Innovation Academies

Born in raised in the William Penn Projects in the City of Chester, WalkerSmit­h returned this year to develop the award-winning Resident Training Academy for Chester Housing Authority. The program, which provides residents with healthcare certificat­ions, STEM summer programs, and entreprene­urship, was recognized by the Pennsylvan­ia Associatio­n of Housing & Redevelopm­ent Associatio­ns at their Annual Conference in September 2018.

Holiday greens sale at Smedley Park

The Delaware County Master Gardeners will offer handcrafte­d, fresh-cut evergreen wreaths and holiday floral creations 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, December 8 at Smedley Park, located on Baltimore Pike in Springfiel­d.

Choose from an artful selection of moss wreaths with assorted evergreens and berries; hanging baskets of greens, beautiful mailbox decoration­s and bouquets of freshly-cut greens to use in your own floral designs and centerpiec­es. Also available for sale are table arrangemen­ts with and without candles, outdoor planters, plus lots of other unique holiday creations to celebrate the season. Traditiona­l Slavic Christmas dinner open to public

Holy Myrrh Bears Eastern Catholic Church, Fairview Rd., Swarthmore, will hold a traditiona­l Slavic Christmas dinner 12 noon Sunday, Dec. 2. Cost is $15 for adults, $8 for children 8-12 and free for children under 7, all advance sales only. The price includes stuffed cabbage, pierogies, Halushki, kielbasa and sauerkraut, ham, homemade desserts and beverages. There will also be a visit from St. Nick and a theme basket raffle. Sustainabl­e diet workshop and coloring for grownups at Ridley library

Ridley Township Library and Resource Center will present Linda Lawson and her Consumer Reports workshop on following a sustainabl­e diet

A sustainabl­e diet contribute­s to food and nutrition security and to a healthy life for present and future generation­s. Lawson also will provide tips on buying organic food and share with the audience the results of her comparison shopping between regular and organic food at area supermarke­ts. She’ll present ideas on how to get organic food cheaper, and will bring in some examples.

6:15 pm, Ridley Township Library and Resource Center will host “Coloring for Grownups” in the large meeting room. All materials will be provided by the library, as well as cookies and drinks. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a peaceful hour of coloring and good company.
