100 Years Ago – 1918: A Chester man, whose name could not be learned, was robbed of a gold watch at an early hour yesterday morning in a Chinese restaurant at Third and Flower streets, according to the proprietor of the place, who narrowly escaped a beating at the hands of the unknown patron. The man had twice fallen asleep in the restaurant, claiming his watch had been stolen upon awakening the second time. The stranger was accompanie­d to Third and Jeffrey streets by the restaurant keeper and while en route attempted to assault him. The establishm­ent is spoken of in police circles at the worst “joint” in the West End.

75 Years Ago – 1943: Rumors that Chester Chief of Police George J. Feeney and Magistrate R. Robison Lowry are to be replaced were denied today by Mayor Ralph F. Swarts, answering to reports that the two were to be dismissed “around the first of the year” because they allegedly refused to permit certain gambling interests to start in business. Since vice and gambling were cleaned up three years ago, there have been no organized rings operating in the city, and gambling elements are said to have been disgruntle­d and demanded the removal of Feeney and Lowry. 50 Years Ago – 1968: What started as a St. James student trying to sell a book of chances developed into a project that netted some 180 pounds of candy to be sent to American servicemen in

25 various hospitals. Vice Principal John Mooney said a student went to a sporting goods store at Seventh Street and Edgmont Avenue to sell a book of Fall Festival chances. Manager Harry Goldstein said he would buy them if students worked on his Operation Holiday Star project.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Chester-Wallingfor­d Chapter of the American Red Cross and Chester’s J. Lewis Crozer Library will be jointly sponsoring a World AIDS Day event at the library. The library’s new AIDS informatio­n collection that includes books, pamphlets, periodical­s and video tapes to be permanentl­y housed at the library.

10 Years Ago – 2008: State police broke up an underage drinking party at a Chadds Ford motel and charged a 21-year-old Boothwyn man with furnishing alcohol to minors. Four juveniles spotted on Route 202 around 12:58 a.m. ran from troopers, but were stopped as they tried to enter a room at the motel.
