100 Years Ago – 1918: The Chester Brewery, the only plant of its kind in this city and county, along with the other breweries and distilleri­es across the United States, ceased brewing lager beer yesterday. The bone-dry legislatio­n for the United States during the period of the war does not go into effect until July, when, unless there is some change in the law, all hotels, stores and bottling places will close for an indefinite period and perhaps for good.

75 Years Ago – 1943: From the United Press wire: In his first report since returning from a tour of the fighting fronts, Dr. William Barrow Pugh, of Wallingfor­d, told the National Council of the Service Men’s Christian League in Washington, D.C., last night that American soldiers “hate the war,” want intensely to come home, but are “determined to fight on until victory.” Pugh, who made the tour as representa­tive of the Protestant Churches of America, spoke at the annual meeting of the league, which was founded only a year ago but now has

1,000 units whose programs reach 1,000,000 servicemen and women.

50 Years Ago – 1968: Robert Ogden, Chester’s first assistant fire chief, will speak on “Civil Disobedien­ce at Fires” at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday at the Chester Rotary Club luncheon at Central YMCA.

25 Years Ago – 1993: In an effort to keep kids off the streets, Darby Borough officials had their first organizati­onal meeting to form a Police Athletic League. “We are trying to reach out to kids ages

12-19 who aren’t necessaril­y interested in sports or have been turned away by other organizati­ons because there are too many kids,” said Robert Brown, president of the new PAL organizati­on.

10 Years Ago – 2008: With more than a year before Major League Soccer hits the turf at the planned $115 million Chester stadium complex, fans are greeting today’s groundbrea­king ceremony with the team’s very first tailgating party. But to score a prime spot on news network morning shows for their food-donation drive, fans from the Sons of Ben soccer support club will actually be firing up the grill starting at 6:30 a.m. Sons of Ben co-founder and spokesman Bryan James said the group would be raising money and collecting canned goods for its Help Kick Hunger Drive, to benefit Chester’s Bernardine Center.
