100 Years Ago – 1918: Company G. Pennsylvan­ia Reserve Militia, will hold a smoker in the Armory on Wednesday evening, at which time Sgt. Clayton, of the 18th Infantry, will make an address. Clayton was among the first 10,000 that went to France, in the recent war. He has some stirring stories to tell. Music will emanate from the Sixth Regiment’s band, and there will be “eats.”

75 Years Ago – 1943: A wave of colds and other respirator­y diseases, which officials fear may develop into another influenza epidemic similar to the one which swept Chester during 1917, has been served by local physicians and employers during the past few days. Taking advantage of the run-down condition of many residents tired out by working overtime on various war jobs, the common cold has staged an invasion of the entire Delaware County area during the past week, causing an alarming increase in grippe and influenza, and interferin­g with vital war production.

50 Years Ago – 1968: After months of bitter protest, the Chester School Board – at the request of Mrs. Frances P. Donahoo – reversed itself Monday night and voted not to name the proposed new high school after the former school board president. The new school, to be built on the former Chester Hospital site at Ninth and Barclay streets, will be called Chester High School, the board said.

25 Years Ago – 1993: Using President Clinton as his target, William F. Buckley preached economic conservati­sm at Swarthmore College last night, and the president, with his talents for “glib falsificat­ion” and his “utter confusion with numbers,” fails to measure up. Americans favor the administra­tion’s health care plan because they have not faced up to the facts of how to pay for it, Buckley said, choosing to believe in the myth of the self-generating dollars in Washington, D.C., in responding to an audience question.

10 Years Ago – 2008:

A West Chester man is behind bars, charged with stealing 1,000 Vicodin pills from the CVS on Chichester Avenue last month. The

35-year-old was staying at a woman’s home in Chester Township at the time of the burglary. At the Chester Township residence, authoritie­s found personal paperwork belonging to the man, as well as a handdrawn map that depicted a CVS, a road marked “Chi” and a line to an unmarked road with a dot. The woman told investigat­ors that soon after the robbery that he “was in possession
