‘GOLDBERGS’ DO DELCO
ABC comedy recreates legendary Delco nightspot Pulsations for bachelor party
Delaware County will be in the national spotlight again this Wednesday night, when the hit comedy, “The Goldbergs” airs at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (7 p.m. CST). In the Dec. 5 all-new episode of ABC-TV’s hit comedy, entitled “Bachelor Party,” Uncle Marvin Goldberg, played by Dan Fogler, is planning Barry Goldberg’s bachelor party with the help of Goldberg’s ragtag friends, also known as JTP or the Jenkintown Posse. Troy Gentile plays the role of Barry Goldberg.
Uncle Marvin announces to the group, “For tonight, only one landmark matters. Delaware County’s wildest dance club … Pulsations! We’re talking a 6,000 square feet dance floor, lasers, smoke machines, giant speakers that guarantee permanent hearing loss, wall-to-wall babes and a sentient party robot that came to get down.”
In the episode, Barry thinks he wants a wild, adult bachelor party, but he eventually realizes that his brother Adam’s idea is more his speed. Sean Giambrone plays the role of Adam Goldberg.
ABC-TV’s hit sitcom, “The Goldbergs” is an autobiography of executive producer Adam F. Goldberg’s experiences of growing up in a Philadelphia-suburban family in Jenkintown, Montgomery County, during the 1980s. Goldberg often inserts recreations of his personal life into the show. In addition to the Delaware County reference, many other Philadelphia area locations routinely surface in the sitcom, places like Atlantic City, Hershey Park, Willow Grove Park Mall, and even Wawa has had a spotlight in the show.
“Growing up, the one place everyone would go for a wild time was Pulsations,” said Goldberg, referencing the now-defunct popular night club in Concord. “It was the ultimate dance club of the ‘80s. I wasn’t old enough to go, but I remember my brother getting all decked out with a ton of Drakkar and heading there with his friends. For me, Pulsations always seemed like a tiny version of Las Vegas had sprouted in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.”
Goldberg had his production team recreate Delaware County’s Pulsations for the scene, which was filmed in its entirety in California. The crew was able to recreate the scene realistically from viewing YouTube videos with actual film clips of the legendary Pulsar in action at Pulsations. However, thanks to an interview that Goldberg did on WMMRFM’s Preston & Steve Show in October, the team was able to incorporate an authentic prop into the scene. A Preston & Steve listener called in and offered the services of Pulsar, the famous Pulsations robot. Pulsar was shipped to the West Coast studios and included in the scene.
At the height of Pulsations’ heyday, a four ton spaceship would descend from 12 feet above the dance-floor, and after landing, the doors would open, releasing dry ice, and Pulsar the robot would emerge. Always a huge hit with the crowds in attendance, Pulsar would talk, dance and interact with the crowd. Pulsations closed in
1995. Pulsar the robot was later leased from “Pulsations” to make an appearance in “Rocky IV” as Paulie’s unique birthday present.
Adam F. Goldberg and Doug Robinson are executive producers of “The Goldbergs.” The episode is produced by Adam F. Goldberg Productions, Doug Robinson Productions, and Happy Madison in association with Sony Pictures Television. The show debuted on ABC in 2013. “The Goldbergs” also airs in the Philadelphia area on
PHL17 in reruns twice on weeknights, at 7:30 and 9 p.m.
