Saunders pours in 41 points as Neumann rolls

Saturday was a career day for Nafisa Saunders, and Neumann’s women’s basketball team needed just about all of it.

Saunders scored 41 points, including 19-for-22 at the free-throw line, as the Knights outlasted PSUAbingto­n, 73-65.

Saunders added 14 rebounds and three assists. Maria Maclejewsk­i scored 13 points for the Knights (6-3). WIDENER 78, HOOD 69 >> Erin Phelan went off for a careerhigh 30 points including 11for-11 at the line — and 11 rebounds to pilot Widener to the win. She had 15 points in the second quarter alone.

Devan Rimmer backed her with 21 points and eight boards for the Pride (9-1, 3-1 MAC Commonweal­th). HAVERFORD 58, WASHINGTON (MD.) 46 >> Anna-Sophia Capizzi shot 8-for-12 from the field to pour in 19 points, and Megan Furch added 16 points and nine rebounds as the Fords put on a ball-sharing clinic with

22 assists on 24 made baskets. Katie Cook led the assist parade with 10 dimes to go with eight points for the Fords (7-2, 4-2 Centennial). WRIGHT STATE 71, DREXEL 63 >> Bailey Greenberg scored a game-high 24 points, but it took 30 field-goal attempts to get there as the Dragons fell in overtime. Aubree Brown and Hannah Nihill (Daily Times Girls Basketball Player of the Year from Cardinal O’Hara) scored 15 points each, Brown added seven assists for the Dragons (6-2).

PENN 66, IONA 43 >> Eleah Parker tallied 18 points to go with 12 rebounds and five blocks, and Prince Aghayere chipped in 13 points and nine boards for the Quakers. Ashley Russell added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists for Penn (6-2).

DELAWARE VALLEY 63, EASTERN 57 >> Regie Robinson scored 21 points and corralled 16 rebounds, but the Aggies used a 27-12 margin in the fourth quarter to pull off a stunning comeback from down 13 with 12:32 to play.

Jaelyn Harris and Brianna Young-Harris scored 12 points each for Eastern (4-5, 0-2 MAC Freedom). MUHLENBERG 55, SWARTHMORE 33 >> Audra Woodside scored 10 points, and Faith Nation and Abigail Pirron tallied seven each (Pirron added nine boards), but the Muhlenberg defense locked down to hold Swat (2-7, 1-5 Centennial) to just 10 secondhalf points. CALIFORNIA (PA.) 77, CHEYNEY 36 >> Marlon Herring tallied a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds, but the Wolves (0-8) coughed up 37 turnovers to the 8-0 Vulcans.

Men’s Basketball

An early tear powered Neumann to a 74-62 nonconfere­nce victory over Bryn Athyn Saturday.

The Knights used an

11-0 run to break a 6-6 deadlock. Although the Lions countered with a 14-5 burst, they were never able to take the lead.

Aaron Johnson-Chavis posted a double-double with

23 points and 14 rebounds. He also blocked three shots. Waheem Lowman pitched in with 13 points, Raquan Brown-Johnson added 12 points and Isaiah Wilmore contribute­d 11 points and 10 boards.

DCCC 84, LEHIGH CARBON 78 >> The Phantoms made 18 steals to get their second win of the season. Justin Gans (Bonner & Prendergas­t) and Ketquan Gatewood paced the defensive effort with five steals each.

Gans also had 13 points and nine assists. Gatewood added 16 points and nine rebounds, and Mike Mallon (Penncrest) led all scorers with 19 points. WASHINGTON (MD.) 59, HAVERFORD 54 >> Joe Scibelli became the 17th member of the 1,000-point club at Haverford, but it wasn’t enough as the Shoremen used an 11-4 run in the second half to take the lead for good.

Scibelli finished with

11 points and reached the milestone in his 71st game. Jack Cork paced the Fords

(3-6, 1-4 Centennial) with

13 points.

STRATFORD 82, CHEYNEY

77>> DeAndre Demiel led five players in double figures with 17 points to help the Cardinals (6-0) hold off the Wolves to remain undefeated. Demiel also handed out seven assists and made two steals.

Jordan Henry tossed in 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Derrick Biney added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists for Cheyney (1-8).

DELAWARE VALLEY 76, EASTERN 73 >> Lybrant Robinson and Alex Matsinye combined to make four free throws in the final 28 seconds to bring Eastern’s four-game winning streak to a close.

Robinson drilled both foul shots to give the Aggies a 7473 lead. Matsinye made a pair with two seconds left to seal the victory.

WIDENER 88, HOOD 61 >> Tyler Drews finished an assist shy of a triple-double to pace the Pride to their third straight win. Drew turned in the first double-double of his career with 17 points and a careerhigh 11 rebounds to go along with nine assists.

Brian McMahon also posted a double-double with

14 points and 10 rebounds. Jared Peters shot 5-for-7 from 3-point range to lead all scorers with 18 points. Jalen Howard (12 points) and Elijah Boyd (11) also reached double figures. SWARTHMORE 83, MUHLENBERG 65 >> Cam Wiley collected 15 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead the No. 23 Garnet to their second straight win.

Conor Harkins added 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Nate Shafer contribute­d 12 points and seven boards, while George Visconti pitched in with 11 points.

WILSON 102, CABRINI 91 >> The Phoenix scored the first seven points and bolted to a 26-4 lead in the consolatio­n game of the Doc Greene Tournament at Juniata to hand the Cavaliers their fifth straight loss.

Senior Anthony WrightDown­ing posted a doubledoub­le for the Cavs with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Alsmith Saintilus added a season-best 19 points. D.J. Smith had 18 points and freshman Voshon Mack chipped in with 16 points.
