Box starts wrestling career with Manion Invitation­al gold

Charlie Box’s high school wrestling career is off to a flying start as the Marple Newtown freshman won the 145-pound competitio­n at the Travis Manion Invitation­al hosted by La Salle Saturday.

Armen Dervishian garnered gold in the 195-pound division. Charlie Long placed third at 132 pounds, while Hamza Elfernani (106) and Matt Checchia (120) each took home fourth-place honors. BOYERTOWN DUALS >> Kevin Puliti won all five of his matches, securing three pins at 126 and 132 pounds as Garnet Valley took fourth place at the event.

The Jaguars beat Council Rock North (40-32), Dallas (42-37) and Unionville (66-16) around a 42-27 setback to Owen J. Roberts in the rounds. That led to the third-place match, where the Jags hung with the hosts before falling to the Bears, 39-33.

Heavyweigh­t Cole Deery went 4-0 with three pins, including the win by fall that clinched the win over C.R. North and marked the 200th victory of coach Rocco Fantazzi’s career. Austin Philippone’s pin at 160 was crucial to the win over C.R. North.

Sam DiTrolio went 4-1 bouncing between 182 and

195 pounds, the same record as posted by 106-pounder Dan Husain.

GOLDEN EAGLE DUALS >> Ethan Scott won all six of his matches, five by pin, at 160 and 170 pounds as Springfiel­d went 2-6 at the tournament in Aberdeen, Md. The Cougars downed Fallston, 3627, and North Harford, 34-27. Dan Tommarelli posted a

7-1 record with three pins at

138 pounds, and 120-pounder Jake Methlie’s 6-2 mark included a tech fall and a win by fall.

Hockey

Colin VanAtta’s goal at 2:33 of the third period off a feed from Andrew Miller made the difference as Ridley edged Garnet Valley, 2-1, in Central League hockey action late Friday night.

Ron Higgins opened the scoring for Ridley in the first period, but Matthew Wood got the Jags back on level terms in the second. Lee Wheeler kept Garnet Valley in the game with 40 saves.

Nick Giuliano made stops for Ridley.

Tyler Cassidy turned aside 36 shots in goal for the Fords. SPRINGFIEL­D 10, PENNCREST 1>> Aidan Smith scored in each period and added two assists in a five-point night as the Cougars rolled. Ryan O’Connor, Zach Crain and Dominick Romolini scored twice each. Tom Gabel, Steven Griffin and Nick Medwid handed out two helpers each.

Declan Casey got Penncrest on the board with a third-period power-play tally.
