100 Years Ago – 1919: Six workmen from the Chester Shipbuildi­ng Co. miraculous­ly escaped death yesterday afternoon at Second and Parker streets when a trolley car, operated by an incapable motorman crashed into a jitney driven by James Hartley. One of the men, from Wilmington, Del., is in serious condition in the Chester Hospital. The others were discharged after being treated at the hospital and at the First Aid Department of the company.

75 Years Ago – 1944: The resignatio­n of Joseph L. Eyre Jr. as a member of the Chester Board of Education was accepted last night at a special session. Eyre was forced to resign so that he might accept the post of city assessor. Eyre was named assessor by city council this morning. The position entails a salary of

$2,790.

50 Years Ago – 1969: An official of the Delaware River Port Authority said today the authority will begin within the next few months to acquire some of the 146 city properties needed to make way for constructi­on of the proposed $80 million Chester-Bridgeport Bridge. An official said today DRPA commission­ers will meet Feb. 19 to authorize acquisitio­ns of needed properties from Seventh to Ninth Street, west of Flower Street. The bridge is scheduled for completion in 1972.

25 Years Ago – 1994: Aston police charged two Chichester High School students with firearms violations Saturday night after a gun was pointed at a group of Sun Valley High School students at the Dutton Mill Shopping Center. “This is the second incident involving a firearm in the past three days involving confrontat­ions between Chichester High School students and Sun Valley students,” police announced.

10 Years Ago – 2009: Brookhaven Borough Council recently appointed Democrat Michael Hess mayor. He fills the unexpired term of recently deceased Mayor Ralph Garzia, who served in that capacity for 30 years. “I must say, however, that it will be difficult to fill the shoes of Ralph. It’s hard to replace a legend, an icon and an individual who was everything to everyone. He was my ‘American Idol,’” said Hess. Hess is a 30-year resident of the borough and has served on council for 15 years – nine of those as vice president. In a related motion, Councilman Vawn Donaway was unanimousl­y appointed vice president of council and Councilman Harry Seth was unanimousl­y appointed president pro-tem.
