Hof helps Miami women upset fourth-ranked Notre Dame

CORAL GABLES, FLA. >> Emese Hof and Beatrice Mompremier had double-doubles for the No.

25-ranked Miami Hurricanes, who applied smothering defense to beat No. 4 Notre Dame 72-65 on Thursday night.

The Fighting Irish were held to a season-low point total and shot

37 percent, also a season low. Miami won despite shooting just 39 percent, including 3 for 16 from

3-point range.

Hof had 21 points and 13 rebounds. Mompremier added 18 points and 12 rebounds for her

18th double-double, the most in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Students swarmed the court after the win — this matched the highest-ranked team that Hurricanes (20-5, 8-2 ACC) have beaten, having also topped No. 4 Notre Dame (21-3, 8-2) in 2015.

Jessica Shepard led Notre Dame with 17 points and 17 rebounds.

51>> Asia Durr scored 15 points to help Louisville (22-1, 9-1 ACC) beat Syracuse (17-5, 6-3).

Wearing white-and-black uniforms honoring native son Muhammad Ali, the Cardinals paid a fitting tribute by landing an early knockout punch. Durr scored the team’s first 10 points as Louisville jumped out to an 18-4 lead less than six minutes into the game.

(24) FLORIDA STATE 75, (9) N.C. STATE 70 >> Nausia Woolfolk scored

22 points, including a career-high tying five 3-pointers, and Florida State (20-3, 8-2 ACC) scored 10 straight points late in the fourth quarter to knock off North Carolina State (21-2, 8-2).

(10) MARYLAND 72, NORTHWESTE­RN 57 >> Stephanie Jones had 16 points and nine rebounds, reserve Sara Vujacic made all four of her shots during the decisive first half and Maryland (21-2, 10-2 Big Ten) rolled past Northweste­rn (14-9,

7-5) for its sixth straight victory.

(12) SOUTH CAROLINA 75, MISSISSIPP­I 42 >> Nelly Perry led a balanced attack with 13 points and South Carolina (17-5, 9-1 SEC) warmed up for a showdown with UConn with an easy win over Mississipp­i (8-16, 2-8).

MISSOURI 70, (18) TEXAS A&M 65 >> Sophie Cunningham scored six of her 22 points in the final minute of overtime and Missouri (17-7, 6-4 SEC) ended Texas A&M’s (18-5, 7-3) seven-game winning streak.

(19) KENTUCKY 78, AUBURN 68 >> Rhyne Howard scored 19 points, Taylor Murry added 17 and Kentucky (19-5, 6-4 SEC) used a hot first half to defeat Auburn (17-6, 5-5).

Men

(12) HOUSTON 77, CENTRAL FLORIDA 68 >> Corey Davis Jr. scored 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting and Houston (22-1, 9-1 American Athletic) had another strong defensive effort to beat UCF (16-5, 6-3).

(25) CINCINNATI 69, MEMPHIS, 64 >> Jarron Cumberland scored 17 points and keyed a late rally as Cincinnati (20-3, 9-1 AAC) overcame a poor shooting night to beat Memphis (13-10, 5-5).

Cincinnati, which averages 75 points a game was stymied by a

39.7 percent shooting night (25 of

56).

OHIO STATE 74, PENN STATE 70 >> Kyle Young scored the go-ahead basket with 63 seconds left and Ohio State (15-7, 5-6 Big Ten) held off Penn State (8-15, 1-11).

Penn State’s Josh Reaves stole the ball from Andre Wesson and scored on a slam with 1:34 left for a 70-69 lead with 1:34 left.

Lamar Stevens thought he gave Penn State a 72-71 lead with 32.2 seconds left but he did not beat the shot clock off the inbound play.

Stevens and Reaves had 20 points each for Penn State.

Jayhawks’ Vick to take personal leave of absence

LAWRENCE, KAN. >> Kansas guard Lagerald Vick is taking a leave of absence from the basketball program, leaving the No. 13 Jayhawks even more short-handed as they face an uphill climb to a 15th straight Big 12 title.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self said in a statement Thursday night that Vick has “some personal matters that require his immediate attention.” Self said there is no timetable for his return.

“He has some things going on that (aren’t) public things,” Self said during his weekly radio show.
