AFTER GOING 42 DAYS TO START YEAR WITHOUT A HOMICIDE, CITY SUFFERS KILLINGS ON TWO CONSECUTIVE DAYS
CHESTER >> Police say a city man who was fatally shot outside a residence in the 2700 of Bethel Road about noon Tuesday was a target, and not a random victim.
Daon Womack, 28, of the 2600 block of Swarts Street, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Police Chief James Nolan IV. His death marks the second homicide in the city in as many days.
“He was walking into the house,” Nolan said, noting that based on preliminary information it appears he was shot at close range.
The residence is the home of the victim’s girlfriend, according to Nolan. She was inside the house when the shots rang out, as were an unknown number of children. There were no other injuries.
An investigation is ongoing, but Nolan said the fatal shooting does not appear to be connected to the fatal shooting on Monday of 18-year-old Yahmire Curry. Curry succumbed to his injuries about 90 minutes after he was shot while he was walking in the 700 block of Pennell Street, not far from his home.
Following numerous 911 reports, police responded to the scene about 1:03 p.m., according to Nolan. As officers were arriving, the victim was already being transported to the CrozerChester Medical Center by a private vehicle. Investigators followed the vehicle to Crozer’s emergency department. Curry suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is believed to have been in surgery when he died, Nolan said.
