100 Years Ago – 1919: The battle over the selection of a Chester chief of police to fill the vacancy caused by the resignatio­n of former Chief Vance is virtually at an end. Council will elect Captain Davenport at the next meeting. McDowell contends that Davenport was his original man, while commission­ers Worrilow, Messick and Miller claim that Davenport’s name was never presented for their considerat­ion.

75 Years Ago – 1944: One hundred thirty-six persons, 46 of them servicemen, were rounded up in a wholesale raid by police and members of the Shore Patrol at Marty’s 100Club,

100 E. Third St., Saturday night in one of the largest operations of its kind here in many months. Moving to the club at 11 p.m. under Sgt. Carl Peterson, police took stations at both doors and began rounding up the patrons. Magistrate Lowry continued the hearing this morning, holding the proprietor under $300 bail on selling liquor to minors.

50 Years Ago – 1969: Delaware County’s state representa­tives oppose Gov. Raymond P. Shafer’s plan for a state income tax and a “hold-the-line” budget, said Rep. Donald W. McCurdy, R-165 of Springfiel­d. Meanwhile, Chester Mayor John H. Nacrelli apparently will miss an opportunit­y next Monday to discuss the budget with the governor. Robert F. O’Neill, city public relations director, said Nacrelli is vacationin­g in Florida and will not return until Monday. 25 Years Ago – 1994: More than 500 former students and teachers from St. Francis de Sales Grade School in Aston recently turned out for the school’s Eighth Grade Reunion. The get-together was to celebrate the church’s centennial and was timed to coincide with Catholic Schools Week. Graduates came from as far as Florida and Arizona to celebrate with a Mass and open house. Jack Crowley was the lone representa­tive of the earliest class in attendance, 1922.

10 Years Ago – 2009:

A stolen Chevy Suburban equipped with OnStar aided in tracking the thief who authoritie­s say assaulted four motel patrons in Delaware, knocking two of them unconsciou­s, before fleeing across the Pennsylvan­ia state line. Pennsylvan­ia State Police apprehende­d the 32-yearold Wilmington man on Edgmont Avenue in Chester about two hours after the apparently unprovoked assault. He remanded to the county prison after failing to post $50,000 cash bail.
