100 Years Ago – 1919:

A German man, residing in Chester since last May and laid off by the Chester Brewing Co. a few days ago, was lured to a lonely section of Edwards Street, near Fourth, and pounced upon by a trio of highwaymen. The men cut a leather wallet from the German man’s trousers, containing $1,600. The robbery occurred shortly after 8 o’clock Saturday night. Patrolmen Vali and Hamby took into custody a man living at Ryan’s Hall, Fourth and Edwards streets, several hours later.

75 Years Ago – 1944: The new Chester Times Year Book and Almanac of Delaware County for 1944 is now in the hands of the news dealers, and distributi­on to subscriber­s of the Chester Times will start on Saturday. Because of war time conditions, the new Year Book has been printed on paper of a lighter weight than in previous years. This made possible a saving of almost a full ton of paper without reducing the number of pages.

50 Years Ago – 1969: The Chester Order of DeMolay Chapter has been named the world’s best DeMolay chapter for the second consecutiv­e year. A chapter official said the Chester chapter is the only one to have achieved the honor in the internatio­nal organizati­on’s history. The award was announced Saturday at the chapter’s 10th anniversar­y banquet in PMC Colleges MacMorland Center, with more than 700 in attendance. The competitio­n, involving about

2,500 chapters, covers community service, ritual, expansion, visitation­s and good works.

25 Years Ago – 1994: Footprints on the snowcovere­d rooftop led to the skylight window thieves used to enter a specialty shop during the night, according to Upper Darby police. The burglary and theft was reported Tuesday by employees of the Leather and Fur Ranch, 40 S. 69th St., shortly after opening for business. An assortment of leather and fur merchandis­e and an undisclose­d amount of cash were taken from the premises.

10 Years Ago – 2009: Redefining an old idea, Folcroft police are stepping up patrols in problem areas to improve the quality of life in the borough. It’s been about a month since officers Kevin Wiley and Chris Eiserman took on the role of anti-crime partners. They’re working random shifts five days a week for every frustrated resident who has ever called police headquarte­rs.
