Alston carries Temple over South Florida in OT

TAMPA, FLA. >> Shizz Alston Jr. had 24 points, including the game-winning free throw, as Temple narrowly defeated South Florida 70-69 in overtime on Saturday night.

South Florida’s LaQuincy Rideau tied it at 69 with a layup with 11 seconds left in overtime before Alston made 1 of 2 free throws for the final score. The Bulls’ David Collins missed two free throws with one second to go.

Nate Pierre-Louis had 14 points for Temple (19-7, 9-4 American Athletic Conference), including two free throws that tied it at 59 to force overtime. J.P. Moorman II added eight rebounds.

Temple trailed 23-20 at halftime, a season low for first-half points.

Rideau had 16 points for the Bulls (17-8, 7-6). David Collins added 15 points and Xavier Castaneda had 11.

The Owls improve to 2-0 against the Bulls for the season. Temple defeated South Florida 82-80 on Jan. 12. Temple plays Tulsa at home next Saturday. South Florida matches up against Houston on the road next Saturday.

ST. LOUIS 62, LA SALLE 49 >> Tramaine Isabell had a season-high

23 points plus 10 rebounds as Saint Louis defeated La Salle.

Javon Bess had 14 points for Saint Louis (17-9, 8-5 Atlantic

10 Conference). Jordan Goodwin added 10 points and eight rebounds. Hasahn French had

10 rebounds and three blocks for the home team.

Saul Phiri had 12 points for the Explorers (8-16, 6-6). Ed Croswell added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Jared Kimbrough had seven rebounds.

Pookie Powell, who led the Explorers in scoring heading into the contest with 16 points per game, shot only 17 percent in the game (1 of 6). Isiah Deas, the Explorers’ second-leading scorer coming into the matchup at 12 points per game, shot only

18 percent in the game (2 of 11). The Billikens improve to 2-0 against the Explorers this season. Saint Louis defeated La Salle 71-64 on Jan. 12. Saint Louis plays Dayton on the road next Saturday. La Salle plays Saint Bonaventur­e on the road on Wednesday.

TOWSON 92, DREXEL 77 >> Tobias Howard scored a career-high 26 points as Towson beat Drexel. Brian Fobbs added 25 points for the Tigers.

Nakye Sanders had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Towson (1017, 6-8 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n).

Towson dominated the first half and led 46-19 at the break. The Dragons’ 19 first-half points marked a season low for the team.

Alihan Demir had 17 points for the Dragons (12-16, 6-9). Camren Wynter added 13 points and eight assists. Trevor John and Troy Harper had 12 points apiece.

The Tigers leveled the season series against the Dragons with the win. Drexel defeated Towson

72-66 on Jan. 17. Drexel matches up against Delaware at home next Saturday.

HARVARD 75, PENN 68 >> Bryce Aiken had 25 points and coach Tommy Amaker earned his

400th career victory as Harvard defeated Penn in overtime.

Aiken nailed a 3-pointer to tie it with five seconds left in regulation and the Crimson opened the overtime period on a 10-2 run.

Justin Bassey had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Harvard (138, 6-2 Ivy League). Noah Kirkwood added 14 points and six rebounds. Chris Lewis had 12 points and three blocks for the visitors.

AJ Brodeur had 23 points for the Quakers (15-9, 3-5). Devon Goodman added 22 points. Antonio Woods had 10 points and eight rebounds.
