Other Time s
100 Years Ago – 1919: Chester Hospital is feeling the effects of Prohibition, it was stated there today. The accident book seems to bear out this assertion. In the past, when “likker” was around and no espionage to stop a man from taking his nip, or several of them, there were many falls and fights and the accident ward was often busy. This has not occurred, though, since the bars were closed on real “hard” drinks.
75 Years Ago – 1944: A burglar who was surprised in the act of robbing the Chester Grill at Ninth and Sproul streets slugged the
62-year-old proprietor with a blackjack and escaped with $196 in loot. Charles Platten, of 206-A W. Seventh St., owner of the wellknown diner, was taken to Chester Hospital after his cries for help were head by two men a block away.
50 Years Ago – 1969: More than 50 workers of the Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. rigging department staged a wildcat walkout Tuesday night and this morning, leaving the department with only a skeleton crew operating. Spokesmen for the striking workers said the walkout was in protest of “harassment” by a supervisor in their department. Company officials treated the matter lightly, saying “when just a few men out of 5,000 stay off their jobs, that’s not news.”
25 Years Ago – 1994: Two Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Delaware County will be honored at the VFW Department of Pennsylvania 1994 State Convention July 13-16 in Pittsburgh. LeVan-Smith-Raibley VFW Post 7213, of Norwood, earned first place in the VFW Pennsylvania Department Community Activities Recordbook Contest for
1993-94. Peter and Ritamary Prendergast served as community activities chairpersons for the Norwood post. The Herbert W. Best Post 928, of Folsom, Ridley Township, earned fifth place in the same competition. Joseph and Donna Bortenbach served as community activities chairpersons for the Best Post.
10 Years Ago – 2009: More than 170 residents of the Belmont 55-and-over adult community gathered July 1 to celebrate the establishment of a 19060 Garnet Valley ZIP code, with entertainment by the Irish American String Band and a variety of food and beverages. Prior to the change, Bethel residents, as well as some residents of Concord, were utilizing a 19061 ZIP code, which is also used by Marcus Hook, Lower Chichester and Upper Chichester.
