100 Years Ago – 1919: Peter Yeyropanik, of 824 E. Eight St., Chester, is mourning the loss of his citizenship papers. The man lost the papers from his pocket between the plant of the Sun Shipbuilding Co. and Third and Market streets. Owning to the value of the papers to the man, he is in hopes that they have been picked up and will be returned to him.
75 Years Ago – 1944: Chester area residents faced the prospect of failing in a vital war service for the first time this afternoon. Less than half the 750 volunteers needed for blood donations next week have signed, according to Mrs. Edward E. White, chairman. Donations will be made at St. Paul’s Parish House starting next Monday. One hundred and twenty-five more donors are needed on Monday, 180 on Tuesday, and 150 more on Wednesday.
50 Years Ago – 1969: If inmates at Broadmeadows Prison want to play, they are really going to have to work hard. They’ll be constructing their own exercise areas. At the monthly meeting of the prison board Thursday, several bids to have four exercise yards constructed by outside firms were deemed “unrealistic” by the prison board members. If was therefore decided to have the prisoners build their own yards.
25 Years Ago – 1994: A sinkhole blocked off a portion of Providence Avenue in Aldan yesterday afternoon into the evening, but a lid placed over the opening will allow traffic on the roadway today. The hole on the 400 block of Providence Avenue was about a foot in diameter at the street-level opening, but reached several feet below the surface. PennDOT workers placed a metal lid over the hole overnight and will fill it with concrete within the next few days.
10 Years Ago – 2009: Wingate Road in the Bywood neighborhood of Upper Darby came under siege early Friday morning after three gunmen allegedly threatened a motorist and ransacked his house. The trio escaped out a secondfloor skylight onto the rooftop of the row of homes, but two surrendered after helicopters hovered overhead. The third suspect entered another residence on the block through the skylight and hid in the basement, feigning sleep. Five fully loaded semiautomatic hand guns were seized, including a machine gun and Colt .45 caliber with a laser. “These guys were ready for war,” Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said, noting police have determined two of the guns were reported stolen.
