New Marple Newtown superintendent to start at $195G
NEWTOWN >> The newest superintendent of the Marple Newtown School District will earn a starting salary near $200,000 according to her contract obtained through a Right to Know request.
Marple Newtown’s own Tina Kane was selected by the school board on June
17 to lead the district of
3,300 students for a threeyear term beginning July 1, earning $195,000 with salary increase of up to 5 percent for each of the next two years of her contract if the school board. Increases will not be based on annual evaluations by the board of Kane. This is at least $50,000 more in pay than when she started as Paxon Hollow Middle School principal two years ago.
As superintendent, the district will also reimburse Kane $5,000 for auto allowance, up to $5,000 in professional association membership dues and reimbursement for the cost of courses, degrees, tests taken or conferences attended that are directly related to her employment. Ninety percent of medical, dental, vision and prescription drug insurances premiums will be provided to Kane, spouse and eligible dependents.
Kane will also receive 12 days of paid sick leave, 25 days of paid vacation, and four paid personal days per year, plus time for funeral and sick leave.
This contract expires on June 30, 2022. Written notice at least 270 days of before the termination date is required of Kane to the board of her intention of continued employment with the district after the contract. The board will, at least 150 days of the contract’s end, have an agenda to retain Kane or consider other candidates.
Kane’s starting salary was not disclosed by Kane at her swearing-in on June 17 or by district officials in the days to follow. A Right to Know request was submitted to retrieve this information.
She succeeds Carol Cary, whose contract was not renewed with the district last year. District Business Administrator Joseph Driscoll served as the interim superintendent for the 201819 school year at a per diem rate of $175. Kane was not the board’s first choice during the superintendent search. Initially, only current superintendents and assistant superintendents were invited to apply for the position, seven of whom were given first round interviews. The board opened up its search criteria to include internal candidates which included Kane.
Kane has been with Marple Newtown for over 20 years, serving as a building administrator at the high school, middle school and elementary schools. She earned master’s and doctorate degrees in education from Widener University.
