Broomall-Newtown, UDHL win state tourney openers

Broomall-Newtown is off to a great start in the Babe Ruth 15s state tournament.

Christian Kegel’s home run and two-run double helped B-N to a 1310 victory over Altoona Wednesday in the first game of pool play at Dermond Field in Upper Darby.

Cathal Dowd and Matt Cantwell both collected three hits as B-N plated four runs in the first inning and never looked back. Tommy Lucchesi, Joe McGinnis and Luke Tarr shared the pitching duties, while catcher Joe Downs played stellar defense and halted a pair of rallies with his arm.

In another Babe Ruth 15s game: UDHL 12, 21ST WARD 1 >> Matt Tassone recorded six strikeouts in a five-inning complete game. Shawn Webb’s three-run double highlighte­d an eight-run fourth inning for twotime defending champion UDHL. Danny Sullivan and Vincent Proetta each delivered a two-RBI single.

In the District 19 10U tournament: RIDLEY AREA 10, ASTON-MIDDLETOWN 9 >> Cole Romano led the charge for RALL with three hits and three RBIs. T.J. Balletti added a pair of knocks and drove in four runs, while Nicky Vanni and Logan Camp contribute­d two hits apiece. Justin Teehan was the winning pitcher.

Ridley Area plays Media for the District 19 Little League title Thursday, 6 p.m. at Newtown-Edgmont Little League.

In Main Line Senior Legion action:

NETHER PROVIDENCE 4, HAVERFORD 0 >> Tristan Corcoran threw four perfect innings to pace NP to victory in a winners bracket contest. Ethan Pecko and Jack Liberio combined for three shutdown innings of relief.

Leading the offense was T.J. McNeely, who smacked a double and knocked in a pair of runs. Liberio and Luigi Malo each chipped in with a hit and an RBI. Dan Crossan played excellent defense at third base.

In the Delco League:

CHESTER 7, ASTON VALLEY 6 >> Credit Jim Balk’s keen eyesight and knowledge proved beneficial for Chester Tuesday night. The veteran coach noticed that Aston Valley’s Rob Caruso failed to retouch second base while going back to first base after Tim Johnson made a running catch for the second out of the inning.

Chester appealed and Caruso was called out to end the game.

Chester scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning on an error. Steve Wells hit a sacrifice fly to tie the contest. Alex Barker went 3-for-3 with two homers, three RBIs and three runs scored. Wells was 21-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

In action Wednesday: NARBERTH 9, MARPLE NEWTOWN

2>> Sean Spratt went 2-for-3 with a double and Tommy Toal went

1-for-1 with a triple, three walks and two runs scored for the Mudcats. Ryan Guckin and Kevin McGowan both drove in two runs. Joe Ravert pitched four innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. WAYNE 7, SPRINGFIEL­D 5 >> Alden Mathes went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Matt Briner collected three RBIs for Wayne. Tommy Jacobs had two hits and Ryan Buck picked up the win out of relief.

Mitch Helmandoll­ar went 3-for-4 for Springfiel­d.

UPPER DARBY 8, ASTON VALLEY 5 >> Brian Pazulski pitched three scoreless innings in relief and Ben Mutz had a double and two RBIs for the Blue Sox. Tom Donahue rapped a two-run single.

In the Intermedia­te EDCO playoffs:

BROOMALL-NEWTOWN 5, SPRINGFIEL­D 1 >> Owen Noonan celebrated his 18th birthday by pitching B-N to a sweep in the quarterfin­al round. Noonan allowed only one hit over five innings of work.

Mike “Fox” Volpe stole home in the seventh inning and Jimmy O’Brien slammed a two-base knock. Jason Anderson and Ryan Cuthbertso­n combined to throw two innings of scoreless relief.

Josh Kilgallen pitched well in defeat for Springfiel­d. Ron DeLollis had the team’s only hit and run scored.

Softball

Stephon Hutton came through with a two-run triple and Ricky Watkins, Derek Powell and Deron Miller each had an RBI hit to lead The Union to a 5-1 victory over J.T. Brewski’s in the Penn-Del Over-50 League quarterfin­als. The Union won the series, 2-0.

Derek Stukes was the winning pitcher.

In the Brandywine Valley Senior League:

BOSS AUTOMOTIVE 11-10, GOSHEN BEVERAGE 8-11 >> Boss split the doublehead­er, but won the regular season divisional championsh­ip. Ron Mento and Ralph Camardelli had five hits apiece. Bill Auve, Larry Riggs, Mike Dalesio and Tom Daley each supplied three hits.
