100 Years Ago – 1919:

One hundred children from the courts and alleys of Philadelph­ia were taken yesterday for a week’s outing to the Salvation Army’s Fresh Air Farm at Upland, on the former Crozer Estate. For the next seven days, the kiddies will rise at 7 a.m., breakfast on fresh eggs and milk, and then romp over 21 acres of ground. There will be no one to chase them when they play ball, and they will bathe in a real stream instead of standing before a fire hydrant.

75 Years Ago – 1944: Proof that the average citizen does not know what the electoral college is was given Tuesday in Chester when two reporters from the Times asked 15 persons and found only four who had any idea about the subject. Those questioned represente­d a cross section of the county and included a policeman, two county commission­ers, an insurance man and a young woman who was an office secretary of the CIO Political Education Committee for Delaware County.

50 Years Ago – 1969: Members of Norwood United Methodist Church, Chester Pike and Ridley Avenue, are being encouraged to support “Project Astronaut.” The project is in answer to the efforts of Mrs. Madeline Murray, Baltimore, who has “more than 27,000 signatures on a petition commending the astronauts for their Bible reading from space on Christmas Eve.” A form that reads, “I approve and appreciate the Christian testimony made by our astronauts,” and which provides space for signature and address has been distribute­d.

25 Years Ago – 1994: Brookhaven Council will decide whether to build a new municipal building/community center at 7 p.m., July

18, during a continuati­on of last night’s council meeting. Interested residents are invited to attend and offer input before council’s vote, said council President Dick Denza. At that meeting, such factors as cost, maintenanc­e fees and any potential tax increase will be discussed, Denza said. At a public hearing last week, about 120 residents attended to learn more about the facility, proposed for a borough-owned parcel behind Burger King on Edgmont Avenue.

10 Years Ago – 2009: A Michigan man in the area working as an intern is behind bars at the county prison, charged with seven counts of indecent exposure, according to Pennsylvan­ia State Police. The 20-yearold was arrested without incident July 10. Authoritie­s said he was operating a 2001 gold GMC Yukon, with Michigan registrati­on, when the alleged incidents occurred in the last month. Following a preliminar­y hearing, he was committed to the county prison in lieu of $100,000 cash bail.
