100 Years Ago – 1919: Chester saloonmen are taking a chance with Philadelphia hotelmen and others and many of the places closed since the wartime prohibition opened today.
It is understood that practically all the hotels will be open by tonight selling two and three-fourth beer. The historic Washington House, which closed its doors last Saturday night after operating its barroom continuously since 1724, opened this morning selling two and three-fourth beer. The Swan hotel, controlled by the same company, which has been selling the near stuff – less than one-half of one percent – also joined the two and three-fourth class today.
75 Years Ago – 1944: The second link in the new Industrial Highway, from Wanamaker Avenue in Essington to the Airport Circle, was opened to traffic today, giving motorists a fine broad highway from Crum Creek in Ridley Township right into the heart of Philadelphia. Costing more than $3,000,000, the first link from Crum Creek to Wanamaker Avenue was opened in February with a ceremony attended by Gov. Edward Martin and members of his staff.
50 Years Ago – 1969: Area nongovernmental establishments seem to be “up in the air” as far as observing Monday as a holiday to celebrate man’s first moon landing. Several banks contacted today said they would be “open as usual.” However, an official at Delaware County National Bank said a decision had not been made. Boeing Company’s Vertol Division announced it would work a normal schedule. However, other industrial plants contacted said they hadn’t decided.
25 Years Ago – 1994: Longtime Trainer Borough Secretary William Nealy was honored for his service since 1956 as borough secretary. Nealy, a lifelong Trainer resident and the former principal of Wetherill School in Chester, was honored recently as “”Mr. Trainer” for his knowledge of the borough. Nealy received a gift certificate to the Concordville Inn. At the same meeting, Councilman Cliff Ward was presented with a plaque commemorating his 20th year as a councilman.
10 Years Ago – 2009: A custodial worker at Ridley High School has been charged with pulling a knife on a co-worker on school property. The
66-year-old had been harassing the co-worker repeatedly July 14, making lewd remarks about the co-worker’s girlfriend.
