100 Years Ago – 1919: Not a single thing to do in the accident ward at Chester Hospital since yesterday at noon was the statement given out at the hospital office today. An intern and the nurses assigned to this ward find it so dull at times as a result of Prohibitio­n that they have to hunt elsewhere for something to break the spell of monotony. There are cases in the wards, although not so many as before July 1, and there are plenty of nurses to look after these.

75 Years Ago – 1944: The Chester Municipal Water Authority is actively participat­ing in the campaign to clean up the Delaware River, source of Chester’s water supply, and present source of the nauseous odors that sweep across the Chester and Delaware County riverfront. Rennie J. Dodd, executive manager of the authority, joined officials state, federal and military officials in a conference in another step toward getting Philadelph­ia interests to take immediate steps to stop the dumping of industrial waste into the river.

50 Years Ago – 1969: (From Monday, July 21) From the Associated Press: “The United States put the first men on the moon on a historic July 20, 1969. With much of the world watching on television, the two brave astronauts explored the dusty surface of the moon for about two hours Sunday night and Monday morning. They planted the American flag there and left their footprints for all mankind to hail.”

25 Years Ago – 1994: Media Borough Council was asked to take a hard look at the benefits of the annual Town Fair and other street parties after merchants complained they lose business during the events. Merchants Ed and Bob Chantigian told council they have been adversely affected, and are not alone. The father and son own Thriftway Market and Hometown Kitchens, both on East State Street.

10 Years Ago – 2009:

It does not come with a closet full of white shoes and colorful sports jackets or a box set of World Series highlights or NFL Films voiceovers, but there is still plenty to like about a 3,800-square foot “expanded rancher” on Chatham Place in Upper Providence. The asking price for house Harry Kalas called home for 22 years is $625,000, which means just two Phillies on the active roster, Carlos Ruiz and J.A. Happ, would have to part with more than a year’s scratch to acquire Harry the K’s hideaway.
