Hit batters propel B-N to 14U state title

Just being in the batter’s box was beneficial for Broomall-Newtown in the Babe Ruth 14U state championsh­ip game Friday night.

Broomall-Newtown took advantage of five hit batters to score four times in the bottom of the fifth inning and rally for a 6-3 victory over UDHL at Thomas Field.

The win sends B-N to the Middle Atlantic Regional in Hamilton, N.J. The turnaround time is quick. Broomall-Newtown takes on Maryland champ Frederick County at Noon on Saturday.

B-N was down 3-1 heading into its half of the fifth inning. Alex Bruno was hit by a pitch to give BroomallNe­wtown a 4-3 lead. Joe Verrekia followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

Owen Mathes allowed one hit over the last three innings to get the win. Justin Brennan fanned four in four innings. Mathes also scored twice, as did Paul Daly.

In the Region 3 Legion Tournament

NETHER PROVIDENCE 4, J.P. MASCARO 0 >> Tristan Corcoran and Ethan Pecko helped the Main Line champs get off to a good start. The pair combined on a two hit shutout. Corcoran allowed two hits and struck out seven in 5.1 innings. Pecko closed it out.

Joey Cipolloni, Andrew Yates and Dan Crossan drove in one run each in the first inning to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Yates and T.J. McNeely had two hits and one RBI each. Matt Cicalese was 3-for-3 with one run scored.

Nether Providence takes on Yardley-Morrisvill­e, 4-0 winner over host Spring City, at 7 Saturday night in the winners bracket.

In the Delco League: UPPER DARBY 9, ASTON VALLEY3>> Sean Donahue went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs to keep the Blue Sox two points ahead of Concord in the race one of the two byes in the playoffs.

Vince Gasbarro was 2-for-2. Joe Suppa had two hits including a double, one RBI and one run scored and Brady Mutz pitched in with two hits and two runs scored in support of winning pitcher Grant Kernaghan. CONCORD 5, MIDDLETOWN 1 >> Brad Scull did it all to keep the Canes in third place, two points behind Upper Darby.

Scull struck out seven in six innings to get the win. He also was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and one run scored. CHESTER 10, SPRINGFIEL­D 2 >> Glenn Stanners went the distance to get the win and help Chester clinch a playoff spot. He scattered six hits and struck out three.

Pat Warrington went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI to pace the offense. Edwin Lee was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Alex Barker was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.

Diving

It was a clean sweep for Prospect Park in the Delco Diving League novice division championsh­ips at Knowlton Swim Club.

Ava Nagle of Prospect Park won the girls competitio­n with a score of 101.40, while Alex Giordano took the boys title (79.95).

Ridley Park’s Lea Stout (87.65) and Peyton Rush from Tinicum (84.45) were second and third, respective­ly, in the girls division. Karakung’s Nathan Mulhern (79.45) and Alex Hollar of Knowltown (78.35) took second and third in the boys division. The top three qualified for the Elite Meet.
