Family escapes burning home in Darby Borough
DARBY BOROUGH >> A family raced out of a morning fire that started in the kitchen of a North Third Street row home Saturday as traffic was diverted from the area and the SEPTA trolley was stalled on Main Street for a few hours.
Firefighters hurried to the call in the first block of North Third Street at 9:30 a.m. as it first was believed there were people trapped inside. Fire officials, however, said everyone was able to get out and they were unaware of any injuries.
Captain Jimmy Watts of Darby Fire Co. No. 1 said investigators were focusing on the area of the kitchen as the location of the start of the fire in the two-story home.
Watts said the American Red Cross was notified to assist the family.
The captain said the call was received at 9:30 a.m. and by 10:05 a.m, about 40 firefighters had it under control.
“The heat’s always a concern,” Watts said, adding that’s why additional EMS units were called to the scene.
The captain noted the professionalism of all the first responders who came.
“The crews that arrived on location did a phenomenal job,” Watts said. “Everybody works to their best abilities. They did exactly what they were supposed to do in a fast action. We were able to get the fire under control in a very quick manner to save more of the house.”
