Storms and flooding snarl region’s rushhour traffic

HAVERFORD >> Heavy thunderstr­oms rolled across Delaware County, flooding area roads at the height of rush hour Wednesday evening.

As motorists made their way home numerous water rescues were reported in Marple, Radnor and Haverford townships.

The county fireboard was operating on priority radio traffic alert as numerous cars were reported stuck in high water. Northbound lanes of Interstate 476 were in gridlock at the Marple Road underpass with a car stuck in high water.

Radnor police tweeted that they were responding to numerous storm-related incidents in the township and reminded motorists not to drive through deep water.

In Upland lightning struck a home on the 100 block of Race street.

Among the road affected were Cooperstow­n and Blakely in Haverford, Montrose and Conestoga, Radnor; Hastings and Earlington, Haverford; Pont Reading and Belmont, Haverford; Eddystone at the Amtrak underpass, a reported water rescue; the 2500 block of West Chester Pike in Marple; Union and Nyack avenues in Lansdowne; and the 600 block of West Oak Lane in Darby.

The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood warning for Delaware County at 6:10 p.m. with a flood warning for Chester Creek near Chester into Thursday morning. At 6:01 p.m. Wednesday, the stage was 8.35 feet with the flood stage being 8 feet.

Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast the warning stated with the creek rising to near 10.0 feet.
