100 Years Ago – 1919: If the announced intentions of the Chester police are to be taken as an indication, it looks as if it is going to be a mighty hard Indian Summer for youths hereabout who have nothing to do between 8 p.m. and midnight or later. “I’ve been receiving from three to 10 complaints a day for the past 10 days about young men idling at street corners in different parts of town,” said Chief Deavenport. “Citizens have complained of rowdyism and all-round youthful thoughtlessness and warnings seemingly have had no effect. The city jail is a cool place for reflection these warm nights and the patrolmen have been instructed to pass the news along and invite these talkative young men to come on in. The drinking water is fine.”

75 Years Ago – 1944: The proposed new athletic field-stadium for St. James High School moved a step nearer reality today when Chester City Council introduced an ordinance vacating and closing parts of two streets. As approved on first reading, the ordinance vacates part of East 19th Street from Providence Avenue across Potter Street, and a section of Potter between

18th and 20th streets.

25 Years Ago – 1994: An Upper Darby man allegedly kicked a police officer in the face and fought with two other officers trying to subdue him. The 36-yearold was arrested for public drunkenness when he allegedly began kicking the window and door inside a patrol car. When Patrolman Thomas Sharp opened the door to prevent him from breaking the window, the defendant allegedly kicked the officer in the face, then struck and threatened officers John Brennan and Ernesto Aguirre.

10 Years Ago – 2009: Former Delaware County District Attorney Pat Meehan announced late Friday he is “seriously considering” running in the 7th Congressional District next year. Meehan had been looking at a gubernatorial run for months, generating support and funding for his exploratory committee, but now Meehan will “be encouraging Attorney General Tom Corbett in his expected run for governor.”
